Is this computer pci express x16 video card compatible?

So no problem here, just a question. I need to access two monitors off this box and before I purchase a radeon X1050 series video card, I need this question answered.

Hi,

To my knowledge it does not have PCI Express but standard PCI only. For an add-on video card, it has an 8X AGP slot.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Hi mtribbia, yes the Radeon X1050 has two DVI output connectors. Using ATI/AMD's Catalyst Control Center is where you set up your two monitors. This is known as display extension. Where you can extend your display from the primary 1 monitor & drag the image to your second monitor 2. Download the latest Catalyst Control Suite from here.

The motherboard has a x16 PCI Express Video Card slot , so you should be able to put any PCI Express Video Card into this system. I would however refrain from putting something extremely powerful in there as you will encounter issues with the weak power supply in the system (Unless you upgrade the power supply too)

All modern video cards are PCI Express :)

To upgrade your computer's graphics card, unfortunately you can't just simply purchase a card and install it to your computer. Before purchasing a card, you must first confirm what is compatible with your motherboard. Graphics cards use either AGP or PCI Express technology. Many older computers use AGP. AGP cards can vary in version and bandwidth, whereas PCI Express cards can vary based on their lane . Moreover, the card itself is not your only consideration when looking to upgrade your computer's graphics. You must also consider the strength of your computer's power supply as well, since most newer cards use a lot of power. The black 'slot' underneath, is a combo of PCI-Express type expansion slots.

Looking at the contact pins;
A PCI-Express x1 expansion card, would fit in the slot all the way to the right, in the photo.

See the details printed in-between the white PCI slot, and the black slot underneath?

Means to me the entire slot, is used for a PCI-Express x16 graphics card.

From my perspective of looking at the photo for the Riser Card, I see the PCI-Express x16 slot, (Black), as being too wide in the middle.

Do not see that the gold plated contact pins of the PCI-Express graphics card, will make good contact with the contact pins, in that Black slot.

Haven't worked on a 'Pizza-Box' style of desktop computer in YEARS, so I am kinda' out of the loop.

IF, a PCI-Express graphics card does indeed make good contact, I suggest using a Low Profile one.

1) It has an Intel G35 Express motherboard chipset,

Under the - Chipset heading on the left, scroll down to - G35

Note that under the - Graphics heading, all the way to the right, that the Intel G35 Express chipset;

1) Will support a PCI-Express x16 expansion slot. This means a PCI-Express graphics card can be used, IF, there is a PCI-Express x16 slot on the motherboard.

[ PCI-Express is a technology. The current PCI-Express technology is PCI-Express 2.0

There is a PCI-Express x1 expansion slot, and a PCI-Express x16 expansion slot. (Not relating to Your computer at the moment)

The PCI-Express x1 slot is Not used for a graphics card.
The PCI-Express x16 slot IS,

Now,...you are essentially working on a laptop with a touchscreen.
Once you remove the 10 screws from the Back Cover, and remove the cover, you are looking at the exposed circuitry of the computer.

You NEED to follow Anti-Static Precautions. This cannot be performed as on a regular desktop computer. Touching the metal frame (Of the unplugged from power computer) will do you No good.

You need to use an ESD wrist strap, and connect it's alligator clip to a good ground source. [ Electro Static Discharge]

Your body carries Static electricity. Static WILL fry out (Short Circuit) the delicate hardware components inside a computer.

With the Back Cover off the manufacturer knows all of the hardware components are exposed. This means the person working on the computer should be aware of Static issues, and use proper tools.

The average consumer is not aware of this. This is why only a ram memory upgrade is recommended by the manufacturer. (Before they went out of business)

This is why there are no service manuals released, also.
Only for the qualified authorized service techs.

So,...let's look together. See if there is a PCI-Express x16 slot, for one.
It can be any color. Will be longer than any other expansion slot on the motherboard. The PCI slots (Usually white) are not as long.
(164 contact pins. 82 on each side)

These examples of a PCI slot, and versions of a PCI-Express slot, are all the same color. (Yellow) Not usual for a desktop computer.

The top example is an example of a PCI-Express x4 slot.
Hardly EVER used, I didn't mention it.
Has 64 contact pins. 32 on each side.

The next slot down is an example of a PCI-Express x16 slot.
164 contact pins. 82 on each side.

Next down is an example of a PCI-Express x1 slot.
36 contact pins. 18 on each side.

Next down is another example of a PCI-Express x16 slot.

Last example is an example of a PCI slot. TOTALLY different technology than PCI-Express.
124 contact pins. 62 on each side. (Unless PCI that is 64-bit)

IF, there is a PCI-Express x16 slot on the motherboard, you can use PCI-Express 1.1 or 2.0 graphics cards.

You need to be concerned with;

A) How much height is available for the graphics card, and how much length? Check the measurements inside the computer. Match to dimensions of the graphics cards you are looking at.

B) How much POWER does the graphics card require? It's in the Minimum Requirements stated for the graphics card.
How much power is available to the all-in-one computer?

This could be an instant stopping block.

AMD ATI Radeon graphics cards generally use less power, than a comparable Nvidia graphics card.

C) Worried about your computer per se uses DDR Sdram ram memory, and the graphics card uses GDDR3 ram memory? (Just an example. Not directly related to Your computer)

Don't be. Doesn't matter what graphics memory a graphics card uses.

The graphics card does Not rely on the system resources (Processor and Ram Memory) of the computer.
A graphics card has it's own Processor, (GPU. Graphics Processing Unit), and graphics ram memory.

Is the video card PCIe compatible? I just assumed that by its age that it would be a standard PCI. I was wrong. Allan


System features of HP xw4400 Workstation on official HP web site state:

Expansion Slot
6 slots: 1 PCI Express (x16) Graphics slot, 1 PCI Express (x16 mechanically, x4 electrically), 1 PCI Express (x1) and 3 full-length legacy PCI slots

So it should work fine with modern PCIe graphic cards

A PCI Express graphics card.

Doesn't matter if the PCI Express graphics card uses the PCI Express 2.0 technology, or the PCI Express 2.1 technology.

The PCI Express graphics card, will insert into the PCI Express x16 expansion slot on the motherboard.

A) Looking at the illustration, view the BATT. (CMOS Battery)

To the left of the CMOS Battery (BATT) are three white PCI slots.
Above them is a longer expansion slot. This is the PCI Express x16 slot.

Above it is marked > PCIX16X1 (PCI x16 times 1 slot)


NOTE* When installing the PCI Express graphics card, lift up gently on the Lock 'handle'.
It looks as though you should push down on it, but you need to lift up on it instead.


Also go above the motherboard illustration, and read to the right of the heading > Internal Connectors

In the list you will see > One PCI Express x16 graphics slot.


WHEN installing a graphics card, ALWAYS install the software from the CD disk provided, First!

Computer on, and Windows running, insert the graphics card's Installation disk, (CD) into the optical drive tray.
Install the software by following the directions.

THEN shut the computer down normally, and unplug the computer from power.
OBSERVE Anti-Static Precautions.
Install the graphics card.
Close the computer case, and plug the monitor into the graphics card.

Turn the computer on.

When you install a device (Such as a graphics card for example), Windows will try to find compatible drivers.
IF, THE driver is not installed First, Windows will match up one of it's thousands of generic drivers.

This = No.

You want THE driver installed first, so that Windows will find it, and Not try to match on of it's generic drivers.

NOTE 2*
It DOESN'T MATTER what graphics ram memory the graphics card has.
The graphics card's Processor and Ram Memory operates independent of the system resources.

Example:
The computer uses DDR Sdram ram memory.
The graphics card uses GDDR5 graphics ram memory.

It will work just fine.

NOTE 3*
It does NOT matter if your computer uses the PCI Express 1.1 technology, and the graphics card uses the PCI Express 2.0, or 2.1 technology.

PCI Express 2.0, and 2.1 technology is Backward Compatible with PCI Express 1.1 technology.

Will you get the full capability of the PCI Express 2.0, or 2.1 graphics card?
NO

Will you notice?
NO


What you need to look at it, is how much power will the graphics card use. Look at the system requirements for the graphics card, and be sure your Power Supply has enough power for that graphics card.

Also, IF, the graphics card requires additional power cables from the Power Supply, make sure your Power Supply has the required power cable, or power cables.
IF the Power Supply does not, use a power adapter cable.


NOTE 4*
Graphics card manufacturer's base the power needed for the graphics card, Not just on the graphics card itself, but on an entire computer system, AND the graphics card.

The graphics card manufacturers use a test computer system, that is a powerful computer system.
Gamer motherboard, Dual Core, or Quad Core processor, 4GB of ram memory, and at least two harddrives, and two optical drives, PLUS the graphics card in question.

This complete computer system uses a LOT more power than just the graphics card by itself.

There isn't a single graphics card out there, that uses more than 150 Watts by itself.

Budget to medium:
Good enough to watch videos, older games, and some newer games.

Type of video card


The Compaq Presario SR1630NX desktop computer, has a PCI-Express x16 slot on the motherboard, for a PCI-Express graphics card.

The Presario SR1630NX came out in 2005.
PCI-Express 2.0 technology came out January 15, 2007.

The Presario SR1630NX uses the PCI-Express 1.1 technology.

You can use a graphics card based on the PCI Express 2.0 technology, however.

PCI Express 2.0 is Backward Compatible with PCI Express 1.1

You just won't get the full capability, of a graphics card based on the PCI Express 2.0 technology.

Video chip location on computer board


If this is a direct reference to the Dell Dimension 5150 Desktop computer, it is an Intel GMA950 integrated graphics chip, soldered to the motherboard.

You will see Intel at the top of the chip, and GMA950 under Intel.

This is Dell Support, and the Service Manual for the Dell Dimension 5150/E510 Desktop computer.

More specifically this is the Specifications Documentation, and the Technical Overview part of the Service Manual,

I referenced this page, to show you the basic components on the motherboard. Click on the sub-heading - System Board Components, in the list.

At the top of the motherboard you will see the processor sitting diagonally.

Under it you will see the Northbridge chipset, and more specifically in this crude illustration, you are looking at the heatsink which resides on the Northbridge chipset.

(Has a Z shaped clip which holds the heatsink to the Northbridge chipset. The heatsink has a 'meat cleaver' type of design)

In the area that is blank to the Left of the Battery, will be the Intel GMA950 GPU.
(GPU = Graphics Processing Unit, or graphics chip)

If you are wanting to upgrade your graphics quality, purchase a graphics card, and install it in the PCI Express x16 slot.

How to know what graphics card is compatible with your computer?

1.You have a PCI Express x16 slot for a graphics card. This is the style of graphics card you need.

It is the PCI Express 1.1 version technology used. I wanted to add this in case you need it for reference.

Be aware of this! No matter what anyone tells you, you can use a PCI Express graphics card based on the PCI Express 2.0 technology, in your PCI Express 1.1 slot.

Why?
Because PCI Express 2.0 technology is Backwards Compatible with PCI Express 1.1 technology.

Backwards Compatible. Means it will recognize the PCI Express graphics card utilizing PCI-E 2.0, and will work.

2.You have a 305 Watt power supply. You need to have enough Wattage, (Power), for the computer system, and the graphics card.

I advise using an ATI Radeon graphics card. Which one? Since you have a Pentium 4 processor, 305 Watt power supply,
(With all probability a 18 Amp, 12 volt power rail),
I suggest something along the lines of an ATI Radeon HD3850.

Depends on what you expect from your graphics.

If your reference in your query above is that you believe your graphics chip may be burned out, then I definitely suggest using a graphics card.

The PCI Express x16 slot is controlled by the Northbridge chipset. Doesn't matter if your Integrated Intel GMA950 GPU is burned out, or not.
