Bissell Clearview Bagless vacuum 8990 series

Bissell Clearview Bagless vacuum cleaner is working but smells like something is burning when on???
I have cleaned all the filters and checked for clogs in hoses, also cleaned the bottom brush.

It is not overheating and it kind of smells like burnt rubber.

  • dragonfly619 May 01, 2010

Not sure re: solotion, will have to replace the rubber belt first to see if that corrects the problem.
    Thanks

Does it smell like burned rubber? Also, does it overheat?

This is a pretty common problem among Bissell vacuums. You need to change the rubber belt since it is pretty damaged and about to fail. If you have medium technician skills, you can try replacing it yourself, otherwise contact Bissell and they'll do this for you.

My Model 2961 Eureka wont take power now?

Hi,

Anytime that you smell that electrical burning smell on a vacuum cleaner, this is the motor going bad. There are two distinctive burning smells in fixing vacuum cleaners, the electrical burning smell which is the motor, and a rubber burning smell which is the belt.

The bagless vacuums cleaners in general, their motors last usually no more then 3-5 years. The motor in bagless vacuums work much harder then the motors in their bagged counterparts.

The motors in Eureka vacuums can range in price from $70-$120. If you can provide me with the exact model number on your vacuum cleaner (can be found on the bottom or the back of the machine on the sticker that also contains the serial number) I will be able to get you the part number, and price of the motor that's used in your vacuum.

It may be worth considering to just get a new vacuum cleaner at this point. If you'd like me to give you a personalized recommendation specifically for your unique cleaning needs, I'd be honored to do so. Please just let me know what types of floors you have mostly in the home and I'll be happy to share my knowledge of vacuum cleaners.

I hope this was helpful to you. If you found this helpful, please be sure to rate the repair helpful so other Fixya users that have this same problem can easily find the answer.

Thanks so much,

Chris J.

My vacuum makes a really loud noise when I turn it on. It was working and now it smells like something is burning. I check the belt- it looks ok.

The belt may look okay but it still can be stretched or worn and can be slipping on the motor shaft and thats why you have the burning smell. I would try changing the belt. Here is a link to the manual and a link to the belt you need:

Brush bar wont turn, Bissell smells like burning rubber

The belt just goes from the motor shaft to the brush roll. Do the ends of the brush trun freely, or is one of them froze up, if so replace the brush roll. If it is ok, try to turn the brush roll by hand, maybe the belt got pinched and won't move.

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure.
Mostly, you need to remove the top cover to the Bissell in order to get @ the handle release pedal. There could be screws on the bottom 2 or 3 screws or the top cover could be held on plastic clips or levers and they would have to be released then the top cover would come off.
This should expose the handle release pedal. If you need more information please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area in the yellow pages, or use the trouble shooting guide in the owner’s manual or you can call the Bissell factory @ the information listed below:
