Vertical red line suddenly appeared about 3" from right side
This looks like a straight red piece of thread hanging down the front of my monitor - and it won't go away !!! I have run a hardware check on my computer and all seems okay. Everything else on the monitor looks good and there are no other new anomalies. Another way to describe what this problem looks like would be a guide line photoshop, except red, and it extends the entire distance from top to bottom of the screen and on top of all graphic elements.
does anyone know what this means - how I can fix it?
much, much, much thanks for your time !

Try to reset it
Scroll through the menu options by using the up and down arrow buttons located just under the "Menu" button. Scroll down to the "Setup" icon, which looks like a big cog. Press the "Auto/Set" button to access the Setup menu.Scroll, using the down arrow, to "Factory Reset." This setting is located at the bottom of the Setup menu.Press the "Menu" button on the right side of the monitor. This will bring up the On Screen Display. If nothing happens when the "Menu" button is pressed, press and hold it for several seconds to unlock the On Screen Display.Press the "Auto/Set" button to choose "Factory Reset" and then press the down arrow to reset the monitor.
Most of the time it is due to a hardware issue like a video card or the screen itself.
When does the line appear? A. Is it there even with the monitor or laptop turned off? B. Is it there during the OS logo / boot screen or does it appear after the OS loads? C. If it is a monitor, with your system turned off go into the menu of the monitor by using the buttons on the front. Is the line there?
What you can do to try and fix it is.
1. Make sure you have all the latest drivers for your video card. 2. Change the resolution of the screen. 3. Change the frequency of the monitor.
If these do not fix your issue you may want to look at getting or borrowing a video card and replacing it if this system is a desktop. If this system is a laptop and the above does not fix the issue your best bet would be to put up with it or buy a new laptop to be honest.
Try connecting an external monitor to the Dell Inspiron 9300 and see if the vertical line is also present on the monitor. If the monitor display is fine, then your laptop’s LCD display panel is defective. If the monitor also displays the vertical line, then your problem is with either the video card or motherboard located inside your laptop. Not sure if the Compaq Presario has an external monitor plug, but if it does the above procedure can be applied to that one as well. all those sounding intelligent and saying that replacing lcd hardware will fix the problem probably didnt have the problem themseleves . i had exactly same problem with samsung syncmaster 2043swx monitor . i just restarted and booted into safe mode ( by pressing F8 key at startup ) tried changing reolution in display settings . rebooted in normal mode and asll lines are gone and never appear again . i am uisng windows Vista . so i think it is probably a driver glitch something .
That means the LCD panel itself (the actual glass) is broken. Don't delay, return it and get another before it's too late! The problem will most likely NOT go away, and there is no fix other than to replace the panel itself. The panel, when purchased separately, can cost more than the monitor itself.
