Question about Dryers

1 Answer

My ED56 won't tumble. The dryer starts if there are only a few clothes in it, but under a heavy load of clothes it just hums and won't turn. If i give the drum a spin with my hand and quickly shut the door then it will start. When it comes time to change direction it seems too weak and it just hums and doesn't tumble. I have opened the back and removed a tiny bit of lint and the belt is fine with good tension. The motor runs fine with the belt removed. Could it be a problem with the capacitor? I opened the electronics panel and there were no visible signs of damage to 2 little black cylindrical capacitors. There is a big black cube and I wonder if that is a capacitor that needs replacing?

Capacitors hold a charge as you may know for you are questioning these items. They do die out or go completely dead if an hairline crack is found.; If this dryer is 8 years old or older replacing the two would do the trick. If not inspect the two and check with a volt meter. The u rating will be printed on them and the voltage rating can be found on the web if googled

F&P ED56 has 2 problems

Yes, (2) certainly sounds like the start/run capacitor has failed. You will see it has a split or bulging case, or a displaced end cap. Replace it with one of the same voltage rating and capacitance.

I can't advise you on (1)

GE dryer heavy duty 7 cycle, just finished drying a load of clothes, put wet ones in and closed the door turned to the cycle i wanted turned the start switch and nothing.... but a light hum...

Check to see if you can spin the drum fairly easy. Also, try to leave the door open, hold the door switch in, and then start the dryer and give the drum a spin to see if it starts.

My F&P ED56 dryer just hums when it is turned on. The lights come on and it hums, but it doesn't turn or blow air. We have checked the belt (that is OK), the drum can spin by hand, there is no lint...

sounds like it maybe the motor, here are other reasons the drum won't turn and how to open the dryer. Good Luck Tim:

Drum will turn empty but will not turn with heavy wet clothes in dryer. Is it a bad motor?

no, most likely, especially if it sounds right, it is a bad belt. The reason why i say if it sounds right is because the machine don't know the difference. if it was the motor you would hear a really loud hum before it stopped and then maybe it would start back up and hum some more. if your clothes are really heavy like dripping on your feet heavy. then you have a problem with your washer. Probably a transmission.

Fisher ED56 dryer wont turn off!

HI, this will occur if the timer control module or control board has failed. replacing the timer or control will fix this issue.

Possibly the belt assembly. if you open the door and try to turn the drum does it turn with a little resistance, noises? this model has rollers, pulley, and a four groove belt 92 1/4" , sometimes the pulley sticks after yrs of use, belts wear, drum misaligns. the humming should be the motor trying to work.

check the ignitor under the door panel on the left side of the burner if it gets red when you turn the dryer on.if yes than see if gas shoots out and yes than how long it stays on if in few minutes it turns off than need thermal fuse checked so let me know up to this point if it works or not .
