Question about Plumbing

Problem with Convertible Jet Pump 3/4HP RedLion - drawing water 300' from lake to cabin - when the pump is on it holds 50# pressure by itself but when tap is turned on the pressure drops to 30# then you can hear it sucking from the pressure tank & water volume drops to zero, then pump kicks in again at 25#PSI & pressure in tank is 23 PSI. Is this a pump or pressure tank problem or???? Worked good for last 2 summers!

If I understand you correctly this is what you have:

- A pump that draws water from a lake 300 feet from lake to your cabin (I assume the pump is at the cabin)

- The pump kicks on to maintain pressure in a tank that distributes water to faucets in the cabin. The pump only turns on to pressurize the tank when water is being used (I am assuming).

- When you turn on tap, pressure in the pressure tank drops to 30 psi, then you hear water sucking from the tank to tap and flow stops at tap. Then the pump finally kicks back on and pressures tank to 23 psi.

- The pump is not used regularly.

If water flow stops when the pressure tank is reading 25 psi, then likely the real pressure is 0 psi and pressure gauge is reading wrong. If this gauge is tied into a switch that starts and stops the pump, then this is probably your problem. You may have partial blockage in your pressure gauge/switch that is causing gauge to move too slowly to keep up with the actual pressure changes when water is being used. Ore the pressure gauge/switch may be broken. Pressure gauges are notorious for reading pressure when there is none. If you can unplug the pump and disconnect the pressure gauge/switch and check for blockage in the ports you should start there. You mentioned that this worked good for the last two summers, if if sits unused for long periods, it could promote bio-growth, rust and/or sediment in the connection to the pressure gauge. If you find blockage, remove it and flush it out. Reinstall the pressure gauge/switch and try it again.

One other possibility is clogged strainer(s) / filter(s) in the water lines. It would not hurt to pull and check/clean any strainers / filters in the system including before the pump. I would even check at the lake for a strainer where the water enters the suction line to the cabin.

I would not assume that the pump is the problem yet.

Hope this helps.

Can the pressure switch on the Utilitech 1hp convertible shallow well pump be changed from 20/40 to 30/50?

Yes, if the plumbing can handle the extra pressure. There should be a nut in the middle of a large spring inside the pressure switch. Turn that nut clockwise to increase the pressure. You may need to run some water to keep the pump cycling while you do this.

Pump will not prime.

Pump self primes after the housing is initially filled with water. Failure to do this will reslut in the unit not drawing up the water and could potentionaly damage the unit.

Do I have to hook my tank to draw water from my well?

A bladder tank is designed to give a certain amount of gallons of "draw down" before the pump turns on. The pump will work with or without a bladder tank but will come on every time water is used. Well pumps (Jet or submersible) can run for extended periods of time without causing harm to the pump, but a pump that turns on and off constantly will eventually burn out because it is so hard on the pump.
Jet pumps need to keep "head pressure" to efficiently create the vacuum necessary to draw water from the drop pipe, this is partially what a well tank does.

those two screw nuts control the turn on pressure and the turn off. Under the cover of the switch should be a label identifying them. Turning them to the right increases the pressure

Why wont my Jet pump shut off?

Is the little pipe that connects to the pressure switch clear?

I suggest you remove it and blow through it to make sure it is clear. If the pressure is getting to the switch, it has to shut off ... your switch should be set around 30/50 (on at 30 - off at 50)

Pump cycles like crazy!!

Sometimes a new tank the blatter will be kinda sealed to the sides of the tank.the amount of air in the tank s/b equal to the cut in pressure of the pressure switch.(40 lb) that would be (60 lb) cut out if you messed with the little screw on the pressure switch you have a problem.there must be the 20 psi of differance between start and stop.

I have a Jacuzzi Jet Pump Model 7C-S/B. Not Working

Check the breaker that supplies power to the unit. If it is in tripped position, check if the motor is grounded ( continuity between terminals and motor body), check for shorted windings (infinity resistance value between the winding phases), and finally check if the pump is stuck up due to debris or defective motor or pump bearings.

New 1/2 hp jet pump with tank not working

Your hose size is to small. Use a 2in black plastic line out to the lake. Inspect your foot valve, and
take your pump apart to see if you may have a pebble stuck in it, and remove the inner workings
and clean. Contaminates build up inside and need to be flushed out. Remember to replace the
gasket. Tighten all your hose clamps. Once your ready to start, spray shaving cream on your
fittings to see if your sucking air. I've been through it all and my pump works fine.

I have seen little critters (looks like baby clams) make a home inside the suction pipe and on the impeller in the pump. They can cause a lot of pressure problems with just a few of them in the way.
