Question about Whirlpool ET4WSKXS Top Freezer Refrigerator

Whirlpool ET8MTMXKT cycles on/off every 5 seconds

Whirlpool ET8MTMXKT top freezer 8 years old, compressor (or fan?) sometimes runs and stops about every 5 seconds. Other times it seems to run normally. Temperature maintaining OK. Bonus problem - when going through the 5 second cycles, it causes static on our digital TV's which correlates to when it stops, but not when it runs.

SOURCE: Freezer fan is not working

the fan may be jammed due to ice build up. in the first instance i would give the unit a full defrost for 48 hours then see if the fan starts after, if not the fan motor may be u/s.

SOURCE: Freezer appears to be working properly - fridge is not cold

if this has only one evaporattor coil then you wil have to turn down the freezer too. first check to see if the if the manual damper motor is working properly. turn the tempertur to 0 on the frig and the damoer should close down. look to see if it did. then turn to 9 and you should hear the damper motor opening and feel air from the outlet.

SOURCE: Compresor will not kick on. all fans running,

Compressor won't run or it is "clicking' on and off: This normally could be a bad start relay and over load for the compressor, dirty condenser coils need cleaning, condenser fan motor is not running or the compressor itself. To check the compressor properly you should test it with an amp meter, each compressor is rated in running amps  ( see model/serial tag or the sticker on the compressor )...if the compressor is drawing too much current, this may be why it is shutting off. Check the model tag for proper amp rating. Some relays will be easy to notice the broken with them, they may be burnt. Example oneexample twoexample three. Some of these relays can be removed and give them a little shake, and if they rattle around inside the relay is likely bad. Compressors can also seize and click on and off or one of the electrical windings inside the compressor could have opened up. You can use a test cord to help check the compressor and this also will help with the amp test. If the compressor checks ok and you want to install areplacement start relay. You will need to find out which winding is which. You will need an ohm meter to determine the windings. First check to see if you have windings in the compressor. Then check to see if they are grounded. If the compressor has windings and they are not grounded, you can find which winding is which. Check for grounded windings by reading from each terminal to a good ground on the cabinet. Read from the top terminal to the lower left terminal. Read from the top terminal to the lower right terminal. Read from the lower left terminal to the lower right terminal. Write down the resistance of each reading as you go. The highest reading you get will be the run and start winding of the compressor in series with each other. The other terminal left will be the common terminal. Read from the common terminal to each of the other terminals. The terminal with the lower resistance will be the run winding. The higher resistance the start winding. Using the original style relay is always preferred, but using a general replacement can "get you by" if needed.

COMPRESSOR RUNS A LOT

Your model has a mechanical thermostat inside the control panel. I believe you have something else going on like a bad fan, start relay, capacitor. Something is causing the compressor to struggle to keep up and in turn causing the compressor to short cycle. If the thermostat has no control over run time then something like I explained is causing the problem. Here is a parts manual=> ED5VHEXVB04 Contact me if you would like my help, Thanks Sea Breeze

Fridge and freezer not getting cold although fan is on and it sounds like the compressor is on. But has now stopped running so I unplugged. Is the compressor gone? This fridge is only 8 years old.

Most times the compressor start relay and run/start capacitor may be defective. If the fans run yet compressor gets very hot on top it may be trying to start and cannot because those mentioned components need replaced. Pull away from the wall, unplug and lets remove the lower cover that hides the compressor. If compressor is hot it just may be short cycling because it need these components=> MTB1954ARW Compressor Components

Freezer cuts on every 3-4 minutes. stays on 8-10 seconds. some thawing occuring

If I understand you correctly the compressor is short cycling. The more it does this the worse it gets by causing the compressor to overheat. Sometimes the problem is because the condenser fan or evaporator fan being defective. Pull away from wall and remove cover over compressor unplug and feel top of compressor and if too hot to keep hand there keep unplugged but do examine the evaporator and condenser fan to eliminate them as a reason. The most likely reason is start relay and or start/run capacitor and sometimes a worn out compressor.

Run capacitor click here=> 65889-4

Parts in that photo are marked as 10 overload/relay, 11 is the run capacitor and 3 being condenser fan motor. Condenser and evaporator fan motors do not always stop completely when bad so make sure both run while compressor is running. Compressor too hot to touch

Just make sure that all fans are running when the compressor is working. The compressor is a real fine built model to be 35 years old. The problem with machines and people, they just tend to wear out. If that refrigerator is something you want to keep and the compressor is worn out I would consider replacing the compressor. But the cost may not be something you would want to pay. I do this a lot and usual charge for parts, labor and warranty is $300.00
Hope you well on that Whirlpool!
Thanks, Sea Breeze

REFRIGERATOR IS MAKING A BUZZING SOUND, not cooling

You have one of two problems going on. Your fan is spinning at hitting the sides. Or your compressor is shot which seems to be more the problem and even though it is cold the humming sound is a warning for you that the compressor is shot and it is more affordable to replace the fridge then the compressor. Sometimes compressor can cost more then the fridge.

Light works - that's it! Just quit working.

All frost-free refrigerator-freezers have a thing in the system called a Defrost Timer. The thing is a little clock of sorts that tracks accumulated running time. Every 8 hours of run time the thing cycles through a defrost cycle. The defrost cycle is necessitated by the humidity that forms ice crystals on the freezing coils, if the frost is not eradicated it can build up to the point where no air flows over the coils to chill the inside of the box. The Defrost timer in all boxes fails eventually from old age. When that happens, the coils frost over until they become pretty much just a solid block of ice. Your case may however be the exception, as it seems likely that the timer quit during a defrost cycle. Most timers are located on the front of the machine, behind that removable grille under the door. The timer has a round hollow shaft through it, and can be turned with a screwdriver. If the compressor is not running, give the shaft a slow twist until a click is heard. The compressor should start. If it does, check the fridge in 12 hours to make sure it is not stopped again. Sometimes the nudge will make the timer run for a while. You will need to get a replacement timer. If that doesn't make it take off you should call a servicer.

Kenmore top freezer fridge does not cool but freezer works

Turned refrigerator off for 8 hours, let the frost melt and the fan in the freezer worked again. The compressor now only has a soft clunk when it goes off.

Freezer / Refrigerator not cooling

When the fans are running the compressor should also be running. If the compressor is hot but not running you have a compressor problem. If the compressor is running check for frost on back wall of the freezer compartment which would indicate a defrost system problem. At five years old have you cleaned the condenser where the heat is transferred to the outside air in the room?
