Question about InFocus ScreenPlay 4805 Multimedia Projector

How much does a light tunnel repair cost?

I had the same light tunnel symtoms as a previous post. It resulted in what appears to be a burned out bulb (short fuzzy crackly sound followed by darkness and a flashing red light on the top of the projector). This would be the second premature bulb replacement if I do it.

How expensive is a light tunnel repair?

Where can I get that repair done?

Is it more cost effective to buy a new projector?

Is there a comparable projector that is not plagued with this issue?

Thanks.

Infocus SP4805 light tunnel is not expensive, only cost USD79 with shipping.

it is better to buy a new light tunnel than buy a parts machine.

Hi there

The light tunnel is not a expensive part to have replaced and it is better to do it than to keep on buying new lamps.

You can easily find your nearest Authorised Service Dept online.

Tip : Don't let just any monkey do this type of work on your unit , rather pay a bit more with the authorised agents.

A failed light tunnel will NOT cause anything else to fail. Your lamp failure is completely unrelated. The only thing a light tunnel failure will cause is shadowing of the image on one side. It is a 4-sided mirrored tunnel, nothing more.

Infocus has discontinued parts for a number of their projectors,
including the X series. You options at this point are to either
attempt a repair to the light tunnel yourself or replace the projector.

Its a Light Tunnel failure. Go to www.avsforums.com and search for 4805 Light Tunnel. There are instructions to open the PJ and repair the Tunnel. Also, I posted a DIY replacement option in lieu of fixing the very fragile tunnel.

Infocus 4805 Light Tunnel DIY Replacement Option

About a year ago my light tunnel failed and I was able to fix it thanks to info on the net. Then about a month ago I decided to try to finally replace my Light Tunnel. Mainly because replacement parts are discontinued and manufacturer repair is way too expensive. In the process of failing, I was able to find a great low cost solution that's pretty easy to fabricate. My post is here:

If you have never opened your Projector go here:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=556431
It's regarding Dust Blobs, but it has pics to show how to disassemble the unit.

So as for the Tunnel and getting to it...here is a thread for a different model PJ, but the layout is very similar:

Hope this post is helpful to you :)

Left hand side of image appears darker than rest of image as if a shadow is caused from somewhere. Unsure if this is a lamp problem or a camera problem

If it looks like a dark orange/brown band, its likely to be a Light Tunnel Failure. The Tunnel can be fixed thru the manufacturer, but it will cost plenty. You can also do it yourself.
For additional info, go to www.avsforum.com and search for "4805 Light Tunnel" and you will see threads about the problem...as well as DIY repairs.
I also posted a DIY replacement option since new Tunnels are virtually non-existent:

Half of the screen is dark. Tried a new bulb wilth no effect

Sounds like Light Tunnel Failure. Very common. Biggest problem is that a replacement part is almost non-existent and a manufacturer repair is expensive.
You can get further details on the problem at www.avsforum.com. Just search for "4805 Light Tunnel" and you will find threads about DIY repairs.
I also recently posted a DIY Replacement thread for anyone willing to make their own tunnel:

We have a screenplay 4805 by infocus. the right third has a dark shadow over the picture? the picture is lightly visible thru the shadow.

the light tunnel under the colorwheel has collasped or the projector has been jarred, knocking the mirror inside of the lens assy. out of alignment. Either way, it will have to be repaired by a technician.

I have a new bulb but am getting a dark shadow around the edges of the picture. The bulb seems fine, but the shadowing is covering about half the screen. Any ideas?

The light tunnel under the colorwheel has collasped. This is a major repair. I have known some to glue the tunnel back together, but it requires patience and skill and the right kind of glue....

I have an infocus X2 projector that has a shadow on one side of the image. After reading other posts, this appears to be indicative of a light tunnel collapse. Is this problem repairable in an X2 and if so...

the light tunnel has collapsed and needs to be replaced. it's pretty simple to repair. there are directions on the "tips" part of my profile. so, you can get the part from an infocus service center and do it yourself or send it in to them for repair. either way, try www.avsolutionsny.com. they're really good.

I need a new light tunnel for my infocus X2

Was actually looking up a different problem with an X2 and came across this thread.

I do electronic repair, and often do repair on projectors with this light tunnel problem. Probably 3 a week!

I came up with a solution about a year ago. It's a tunnel peice made of highly resilient carbon fiber, lined inside with extremely reflective mirrored stainless steel.

A company here in St Louis builds them for me and I go through quite a few!

If anyone is interested, feel free to email me at mhale@ahvio.com. I charge $50 per replacement tunnel (They are pretty expensive to make). Plus $10 for shipping to anyone in the US, unless you want to come by and pick it up.

I can include a extremely easy guide to install (Its VERY easy!)

These carbon fiber replacement tubes are a solid peice, unlike the factory that is just glued together mirrors :/ They are morons! haha

I've been using this replacement tubes for about a year now and installed well over 50, so I swear by them! Very resilient to heat, and very resilient to someone installing it that isn't very careful. It's almost impossible to break!

Also sale homemade LED super high flux projector bulbs for the X1, X2, and X3. May be able to build a bulb for a different brand, depending on what the current bulb is like.

These LED bulbs have a life of 40,000+ hrs and use very little power, and produce VERY LITTLE HEAT! Cheaper to build than the factory ones, at about $175 for a complete bulb with assembly. Have about the same ANSI output as the standard bulbs, I actually think it's a little more than the rated (like 50 more lumens or so~)
If interested in either, feel free to hit me up! Willing to send parts, or can do install myself.

Power Failure, How serious a problem and cost?

Hi there

You will either be replacing the Main Power Board or the Ballast Board ( Lamp's powersupply ) The symtoms you described sounds like a faulty Ballast.

Both of the above parts are fairly cheap to replace.

Infocus x3 video problem

Sounds like it could be the mirror tunnel. There is a very small mirror tunnel behind the color wheel (looks like a long prism) that can often fail as it is very fragile. This tunnel concentrates and channels the light to the DLP chip and if it collapses it can cause the very issue you describe.
