Question about Frigidaire Freezers

1 Answer

We have a side by side and my husband cleaned out the ice cube tray. But now the motor for the ice maker keeps running. It stops when the door opens, but of course it has to close. I am afraid that the motor will burn out and we will loose our whole fridge. What do we do! I can't afford a new machine. We are both out of work.

    Hi, The model# FRS22ZRG

  • dwlasvegas May 01, 2010

OK, so I took the toe kick off but i don't see a wire connector. I do have the corner piece directly under the door. Does that need to be removed? It looks like it is riveted on though.

  • dwlasvegas May 01, 2010

No, I don't see anything on the top either.

  • dwlasvegas May 01, 2010

Ok, thanks. Can you please email to (adding the 1) I am having trouble with my other computer and I am having to run up & down the stairs. Thanks

  • dwlasvegas May 01, 2010

Hi Phil, We found the wire connector and pulled it out. Is there anything else we need to do? Will this effect the Freezer at all? Is this expensive to get fixed?

Have you tried to 'lock' the control panel on the outside of door where the ice is dispensed?

Can you send me the model number from the tag just inside the frig, this will help me when telling you what needs to be done.

Okay thank you. We are going to have to disconnect the power that operates the motor. The easiest way is right up front. Can you take the toe panel off the bottom below the doors, the grille that covers the coils. It should pull straight off. Then look on the left side just below the freezer door hinge there should be a wire connector, unplug that connector. Let me know when you get that far

  • Philip May 01, 2010

You should not have to remove anything that is riveted. If the wire is not coming to the bottom it might be in the upper hinge under the cover.

What we are trying to do if find the power wires to the dispenser front the feed into the door usually through the bottom hinge, but it may be on the top hinge on this model.

  • Philip May 01, 2010

It is showing on the diagram it is on the bottom, but since you cannot see it, I thought we would take a chance on the top.

We can go another route if you can't see the wires on the bottom. We can disconnect behind the dispenser panel. It would be best to unplug the refrigerator for this. I will pull up a picture and be right back to send to you.

  • Philip May 01, 2010

Here is a link to a picture of your dispenser taken apart.

I will find the wire to disconnect and get right back to you

  • Philip May 01, 2010

Once we get the dispenser front off we will need to disconnect the switch that activates when you put a glass under the chute

  • Philip May 01, 2010

Fantastic! No this will only effect the dispenser for the water and ice

  • Philip May 01, 2010

The part that has gone bad is about $30.00, it is getting to it that is a bear. It is one of the switches inside that dispenser housing. I am not sure which one it is, so it would have to be tested with a meter. That is what was taking me so long, I was trying to figure out by the wiring diagram and picture which switch it is.

Check if your water filter is up to date, if not check if the ice maker has the option to choose the side of the ice cubes, if so, set it up to medium side.

Fridge Freezer model KA58NP90 Ice maker problem

What is most likely your problem is the crushed ice solenoid. This solenoid, which is located next to the auger motor behind the ice bucket, is failing to actuate when you request cubed ice. Its "home" setting is crushed, and actuates to allow cubes past the crushing mechanism in the bucket. To be certain its the problem, remove the ice bucket, and tape the door light switch in the closed position. actuate the ice dispenser lever, for both cubed and crushed ice. you will see a square hole next to the rotating fork, when you select cubes, it should open. If it does open, there is something wrong with your ice bucket, perhaps the arm is broken, or the door inside bucket is off its snap in type hinge or broken altogether. If it doesnt open, replace the solenoid

Ice maker only fills the tray partially.

There is an adjustment, but first check your filters, including the one in the inlet of the control valve. To find the adjustment, take the cover off the front of the ice maker. On the side may be a little hole. Look for any 'increase' arrow or such. If not, use a small screwdriver to turn the adjustment a half turn and let it make a load of ice. If it gets smaller, go the other way, use small adjustments. If you can get the owner's manual, it will help a lot. Google your unit for one, you may be able to get it downloaded free from Whirlpool.

It's not too difficult to remove the ice maker. A few screws and the unit will unplug from the fridge. Then you can see why the bar is not turning it off. If it's really broken, check for parts or a replacement unit. Meanwhile the fridge can keep on working, and you can use trays to make ice.

Thin Ice on Whirpool Ice Maker

If  The ice maker has completely stopped producing ice Check to see whether the ice maker has been turned off. Here's how to check. Look for a wire along the right side of the ice maker that looks a bit like a coat hanger. If this wire is in the raised position, the ice maker is turned off. On some units you simply lower the wire to the down position to turn the ice maker on. On others, you lower a small red plastic lever to lower the wire. If the wire is in the proper position check the freezer temperature, it should be between 0-8 degrees Fahranheit. If it is warmer than 10-12 degrees, the ice maker may not produce any ice. Check your door seals and thermostat, repair/replace as necessary.

The ice maker is producing ice poorly When an ice maker is producing ice poorly--when it produces just a few cubes or none, or when the cubes are too small--it's usually because of a clogged water line or a defective water inlet valve.

First, check the water line attached to the back of the refrigerator for good water flow. To do that, first turn off the water supply valve. Then remove the water line from the back of the refrigerator. Next, place the water line into a bucket and momentarily turn the water valve back on to test the flow. If the flow is poor, you need to repair, clean, or replace the tubing or the shut-off valve that supplies the water. If the flow is good, you may have to replace the water inlet valve.

Please do rate the solution as "FixYa" if found useful and revert for further assistance.
