usually john the belt will stretch and start slipping. if you take off the cover and see if the belt is still on the pulleys turn it a few times to see if it is tight if not replace the belt.
your drive belt that turns the self propelled unit is worn or stretched and not turning the gears. or the gears themselves are worn down causing them not to engage. check your belt first that is most likely your problem. hope this helps
Your self propell is not adjustable. The belt runs over a spring tensioner, you either need a new belt or axle bushings. If you pull the top cover off, you can watch the belt when you engage it. With the engine off, can you move the front wheels up or down or forward or backward? If so the plastic bushings are worn out and this changes the geometry of the drive system, making the belt appear too long.
Your self-propel is probably belt driven. Belts can make an awfully lot of noise when unhappy. Possible it has rolled over and is running on the wrong side of the belt or is worn and just needs replaced. Hope this helps.,

The Engine Model Numbers May be Stamped Into the Blower Housing (metal engine cover) Above the Spark Plug.
