Go to a marine store and get lower unit gear lube. it comes in a squeeze tune and just remove the plug and squirt it in . both screws need to be out tho upper one lets air out as you push new in lower .the put upper back in first keeping oil in till you put in lower plug

Other than head gasket how can water get into oil on 90 hp 4stroke merc ob

Water seldom gets into the engine oil, but more often in the lower gear case through the seals behind the propeller. If you have water in the oil of the head unit, then a blown head gasket is likely the cause.

Seems to be a known problem, and may just be the gasket between upper and lower unit.

very unusual problem
need more information before I attempt to answer
is it a 4 stroke or 2 stroke , 4 cylinder in line or v engine
carby or efi --year and model would be a help as well
does it run ok at idle but fail at rpms when you take a plug out it runs well on the remaining cylinders
I have a germ of an idea but I need that information first to see it it is viable

I have 2004 mercury verado that is making ticking sound - I thought it was oil, but some one told me that it could be the lower unit... Any suggestion ? Thanks!

knocking is normally the lower unit
ticking is more associated with faulty hydraulic lifters , worn rocker arm bushes or worn rocker shafts
if there is amiss the it could be a spark jumping

I have a Mercury Verado 250 HP 2005. The problem is an oil loss. The only thing i am sure of it is engine oil and despite it was verified by Mercury dealer twice, they didn't find where it con

how many miles are on the car. it is normal for a care with a 100k or more to use a qt of oil about every 1500 to 2000 miles if you keep your foot in it. read your owners manual about how often you should check your oil. it is more often than you would think. think about using an oil additive that helps reduce oil consumption.
