i installed a quickset deadbolt with keys on both sides. if deadbolt is not engaged, inside key won't come out, which prevents me from having door locked without leaving inside key in. if inside key is not in lock, outside key will not turn the lock, which prevents me from locking the door from the outside without keeping inside key in. the moment i stick inside key in, outside key turns easily.

Hi,
Congratulations on a great lock. The fine print for double lock and this comes direct from the manufacture's website is
"Important precautions for double cylinder models - : Once installed 1- keep the key in the interior lock [or within reach] for emergency exit when home is occupied
2- Remove key when home is unoccupied"
There is more about how the install should go.
Please triple check the correct install procedure. also a tip here loosen the entire unit and see if this doesn't free the key up all the time. Then re-tighten just enough to not more around.

Hi.please follow the instructions provided below,to solve your problem;
Most doors come pre-bored. If not, you need 2 bits, One is 2 1/8 inch cup bit, the forstner type is a lot more expensive, and a 1 inch paddle bit, again, the forstner bit is expensive. Measure up the door app 39 inches, unless there is a lock rail on/in the door, then measure to the center of that. Then on the inside of the door, measure back 2 3/8, most locksets now are adj for 2 3/8 or 2 3/4, you can use either one. You can drill either hole first, To drill your one inch hole in the edge of the door sighting along both sides of the door with your eyes crossed so you can make sure you are going straight, you don't want to bust through the side of the door. Then get the big bit out and drill from the mark till you just come through the other side, then back it out and drill from the other side so you don't tear out the hole. Your 1 inch hole should be all the way into the big hole. Then get you chisels, the sharp ones, put the plunger in the one inch hole, nice and straight, then mark the outside with a sharp pencil, cut the line with the chisel then cut out the waste about 1/8 to 3/16 deep, make sure it fits nice and tight, Predrill the two screw holes, or you will split the door.Get the lockset out, the key to the outside, and the button on the inside of what you are locking. Line up the holes, you might have to spin the button to get them to line up, then put in the 2 long screws. Mark the jamb with the striker, To get it right, put the striker on the door, hooked into the latch, mark the edge of the door with a pencil, then put the striker on the jamb, backwards, to the line you just marked, then out line it, use your 1 inch bit to hog out the middle nice and neat, cut the rest out the same way with the chisels, predrill the holes, you should be all set. OH the deadbolt? You didn't mention that, it goes the same way as the lockset, only the hole is smaller, 1 1/2, I think, you will have to check that. Now you know why people call carpenters.
Thanks and take care

I just installed a Schlage deadbolt. If I lock it from the outside (using the key) it locks fine, but I can't remove the key without unlocking it. Now What?

Hi Winston:
Is it possible to try this:
- pull the lock from the door while leaving the deadbolt in place
- turn the mechanism 180 degrees.
- re-install and give it a try.
Let me know how you progress.

How do I remove the 10-year old "TITAN", locking dead bolt from my front door? I removed the interior turn-handle side, but can't get the outside (keyed side) off?

if the inside is off and you unscrewed the main long throught the door screws than it is more than likely just stuck on by paint, they clamp to the door from each side with those screws, if there a no visible screws then its just stuck

Why won't my schlage deadbolt key go to the neutral spot in the lock position to remove the key?

You likely have the lever that goes from the outside portion of the lock through the striker/bolt assembly into the inside portion rotated into an incorrect position when you insert it into the striker/bolt assembly.

How do I fix a Schlage deadbolt. B60 series will not unlock from the inside unless the key is inserted from the outside

With the door open, remove the interior trim (thumb turn) from the door, and using the key, turn the deadbolt to the locked position. Now re-install the thumb turn, in the locked position, and with the key removed see if you are able to unlock the deadbolt. I suspect that the tailpiece (part that sticks out of the lock cylinder and into the thumb turn) is not in the correct position.

Key will not come out in unlocked position

I presume you figured it out by now, but if the tailpiece is installed wrong in many deadbolts, the key won't come out in one position or the other. It's called a "timing" problem and the way to fix it is to take it off the door, turn the tailpiece a half circle and put it back on the door. Usually Kwikset locks are designed so you can't put it in the wrong way, but it can happen. (If it's not the timing problem, then the deadbolt unit is defective or broken. They are designed to fail in a way that keeps them locked, so this could be a sign that someone tried to break in, or that someone used the extended bolt as a way to stop the door from closing and it hit the door frame too hard.)

The best way to install a deadbolt lock without the instructions handy is to look at the "lazy" cam and see if there is a way to install it wrong and don't install it that way. Example: If there are 2 ways for the tailpiece to fit in the deadbolt unit when the deadbolt is retracted and only one way for the tailpiece to fit in when the deadbolt is extended, then install the lock with the deadbolt extended and you can't install it wrong.

How do I lock the door with the key pad? I can unlock it fine but I can't get the door to lock. Don't have the manual. what buttons to I press?

Push the Lock button on outside touch pad to extend latch bolt 1" which locks the door when you leave.
Enter your desired personal code to retract the latch bolt completely which unlocks the door when you return home.
The T-turn on the inside of the door is used to extend (lock) or retract (unlock) the latch bolt when you are inside.
Using the key from the outside will also extend (lock) or retract (unlock) the latch bolt.
This Touchpad Electronic Deadbolt should be accompanied by a Kwikset Knobset, Leverset, or Handleset.

I cut & pasted the above from the installation instruction sheet.
Here is the link to the entire installation instructions sheet (manual):

http://s7d5.scene7.com/is/content/BDHHI/40486-02

It is a .PDF file, so if you aren't able to view it, download and install Adobe Reader from this site first:

http://get.adobe.com/reader/

If you are not able to lock the door using the outside touch pad's lock button, you may need to reprogram the door's "handedness", which gives the lockset the ability to be used on doors that have their hinges on either the right or left side of the door (right-hand or left-hand door).
The instructions for that are found on Step 4.9. This is also an excellent time to change the batteries, which is recommended yearly.

Good luck!

Deadbolt wont unlock

Remove the deadbolt cover by removing the 2 screws. This will get you inside the deadbolt. Try using a screwdriver to pull it back. You may in the end have to break the unit in order to get it out and replace it. I have the same thing happen with a deadbolt. I ended up having to destroy the unit to get it out. You are going to replace it anyway so do whatever it takes to get it to unlock so you can then remove it from the door and install a new one. You do not want a deadbolt that will not unlock.

Kwikset Smart Key Deadbolt Won't Unlock

Kwikset Smart Key locks are complete junk. I am a locksmith and I am constantly going from house to house replacing these "dumb key" locks with original kwikset pin tumbler locks. What happens is either your key or the wafers inside the lock wear slightly, slightly enough to cause your keys to not turn, and since these locks cannot be picked due to a side bar system, they must be drilled off and thrown away when this happens Unless you have another access point to get in the house. If you do remove lock from the inside, throw it in the trash, buy original kwikset and replace.

Loose Kwikset Chelsea Deadbolt

I just had the same problem as samrpetrich with a loose kwikset deadbolt. Here's how I fixed it - on the inside of the door, take off the latch that flips the deadbolt in and out using a very small allen key. There is a round plate cover that is snapped on top of the inside deadbolt mechanism. If you look on the bottom aspect of this round plate you'll see where it snaps on; once I saw where to apply pressure it came off easily - taking off this plate exposed the two screws beneath that were loose. Once I tightened these, I snapped the plate cover back on, but the dead bolt latch back and everything is tight again. Hope this helps.

Kwikset powerbolt 1000 keyless entry deadbolt lock with keypad

Make sure that the bolt hole on the jamb side is recessed enough so the bolt gets a full extension. Without this externsion the bolt will not engage the key release. So when you do your quarter turn you are actually turning more. Remove the strike plate and drill the hole deeper until the bolt can extend all the way. Also double check your key to make sure it is not spurred or worn.
