Stupid reporting back , I only have Master and Slave I don't find CS . I took out the CD player and disconnected the Slave which was connedted to it. I then restarted the computer and still nothing . I did however find the way into regidit and clicked althe way to the numbers you gave me and I did not find Upper filters and lower filters. All of the items seemed to be connected to "mouse" items there was nothing to do with filters. I did not understand the instruction :" if you see the device you have connected " if nothing else I followed the instructions for regitdit , sorry I still need your help

Is it possible to have turned the gray tape 180 degrees ane would it create a major problem to turn it , or how can I be sure it is plugged in in the right direction.

  • billpaso May 01, 2010

HOLD IT !!!!!!!! hOLDIT !!!!! YOU ARE A GENIUS . IF I COULD ONLY FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS WE COULD HAVE HAD THIS DONE A LONG TIME AGO. I went through the instructions and got to the right number and deleted the "upper Filter" and there was no Lower filter but when I started it back up both units worked and I really want to thank you and thanks for sticking with this old senior , it really makes my day . Thanks again. I do have another question for a GENIUS . There are new programs ( games ) that this memory is not big enough , can I add more memory or is it not worth the trouble I respect your opinion and thannk you again

Don't worry just tell me where to do the evaluation and believe I appreciate what you have done so far. Thannks again

Hi billpaso. If you can't see your optical drives (CD/DVD Drives/Writers) in My Computer, then this tutorial will help you:
1. Open regedit and goto:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\ {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
2. Delete "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters"keys in right-side pane.
3. Restart the system and now you should have access to your optical drives.
I hope this helps.

OK dont worry, I will help you. Regedit.com is not the one I was refering to. It´s regedit.exe

Let´s try this first because working with the registry is very delicate.

Check the cables on the back of the DVDs. Or First. Turn off the computer. Remove the CD or the DVD player, just leave one connected. Restart the computer. If you see the device you have connected, then it has to do with the jumpers on the back of the Optical drive.

Remove both and check the jumpers next to the data cable (the big gray one) and you should find 3 settings, MA (Master), SL (Slave) or CS (Cable select). There´s 2 ways. One is leave BOTH on CS or leave ONE MA and the other one SL. That should take care of the problem.

If you do have everything correctly then you have to try go to the registry by clicking Start - Run -and type "regedit" (with no quotes) and find the key y provided before.

Please let me know if you need further assistance. Thank you

YAY!! I´m really glad you were able to do it and now it´s working ok.

Regarding the memory. You will need a PC2100 DDR memory. 1 GB should be around $40 because it is an older technology. That should be enough if you have WIndows XP for regular programs but the more the better. I think the max is 2 GB.

Please do not forget to rate my response and provide a testimonial if possible, so it counts towards my goal. Thank you :D

ADD OPTICAL DRIVE TO GATEWAY FX6840

OK add one. All you do is take the old one out and put the new one in after you open the case and unplug the power cord. There might even be an open slot under or above the one that is already in the computer so just push the plastic covering that faces the front of the computer out so the new optical drive can go in it's place. By optical drive you are talking about a DvD or CD player, right?

My tech guy says I need a new motherboard...he stated they aren't available anymore due to its age (2003)...true?

New motherboardsfor old systems are very rare indeed if anyone has one. Your best bet is look for a used one on ebay etc or consider upgrading to something newer.

I have a gateway 500xl that the previous owner reformatted the harddrive wiping the xp operating system. I've upgraded the ram but without an op system I cannot turn the machine on. I need to install...

Hi there.

For this process you will need:
1) The hard drive you want the operating system on.
2) The operating system disk (Windows, Linux, etc, depending on your os choice)
3) A CD/DVD drive.

Firstly you will need to enter the BIOS on startup by pressing the Delete key repeatedly as your system starts up. In the BIOS you need to locate the boot disk priority section. You need to set priority 1 to your CD/DVD drive and priority 2 to the hard drive you wish to install the operating system to. Once this is done save changes to the BIOS and exit. Your system should now restart and on boot-up it should display a message "Insert bootable disk" or something like that. This is where you put in the operating systems install disk into your CD/DVD drive. Once it is in restart your system. Now your PC should boot up and ask you to press "Enter" to boot form the CD/DVD. Press enter to proceed. The setup should now begin, just follow the steps given by the setup wizard. Once the setup is finished and your PC reboots and on startup you get the same message about pressing "Enter" to begin setup just do nothing. Your PC should then switch automatically to your newly installed operating system and boot into it. Once your PC is fully booted into your operating system of choice remove the setup disk.

My gateway 500xl won't power on

The first thing I would try is connecting a new power supply. If you can borrow one from a friend/neighbor/family member/whatever that would be the easiest/cheapest thing to try first. Also make sure all the wires are connected to the right places and securely connected.

The drive for Gateway 500XL needs to be replaced.

1.The price you will pay depends on the size of the harddrive you install.
2. You can buy a 80gigabyte hard drive for 45 bucks up to a 1.5+ terrabyte size for $150+
3. What is the size hard drive are you replacing and was it enough for what you are doing or do you need more space than you had?
4. Whatever hard drive you install will be empty when you get it, therefore you need to use the recovery or operating system disks that came with your computer or buy a new operating system disk.
5. The new hard drive will also have to be partitioned and formatted, this typically is done by the operating system installation at the beginning, just follow the prompts.
6. Once you install the operating system , you will have to load any drivers for your motherboard , addin cards , printer , etc.
7. then comes all the updates , start with windows updates, then install your virus protection, spyware blockers , etc.
8, now download and install all the little things like adobe reader, flash player, java, etc.

I use tigerdirect.com for 99% of my computer hardware, they usually have the best prices for hard drives, are reliable, and have good support.

Unfortunately your going to have to pay someone to do this unless you can do it yourself. it's really not difficult, just takes some time and planning and a good internet connection on a second computer.

Hope this helps out.. Regards

Find your computer on the Gateway website and download a manual which will show you how to open the case.

Reinstalling Windows XP Home Edition on Gateway 500XL

Do you have access to another internet connected computer that you can use to create a "slipstream" installation disc for XP. It will make your life a whole lot easier, and save hours if not days of downloading updates. Please read this article, and if possible, follow its instructions. http://www.theeldergeek.com/slipstreamed_xpsp3_cd_final.htm
Also, be aware that you can download all the original drivers from the Gateway web site if you use the serial # to look them up. The serial number is usually on a sticker on the side of the front of the tower near the CD drive. If you don't have the original CD with Drivers written on it, you may have to download these in order to get back online, etc once you load the OS.
