First, remove the write protection. There's a slide switch along one edge of the card. The position farthest from the contacts protects the card, the position nearest the contacts unprotects it. Then put the card into the card reader. If Windows brings up a box asking what you want to do with the card, select "Explore." If it doesn't simply bring up Explorer by pressing and holding the Windows key and E. Right-click on the device in Explorer and select "Format..." from the menu. Set your options then click "Start".

Error windows was unable to complete the format

I experienced the same problem (my USB device ). try these steps:
1. Start, Control Panel,
2. Performance and Maintenance,
3. Administrative Tools,
4. Computer Management,
5. Disk Management,
6. Find the USB drive (usually the last storage device before the optical drive),
7. Click on the USB drive,
8. Right click on it and you will see the options (New Partition or Format)
9. Follow the instruction (I chose FAT32), but please do NOT chose Quick Format.

Mirco SD card shows free space 0 bytes and used space 0 bytes

Click on the drive and then in windows select tools then folder options, then view and select or unselect hidden files or folders, plus hide protected files.
This should show all files on the card.
The only other thing I can think of is that the camera uses a different format to Windows. So it can't read the card.

New sandisk 8 gb sd card reports memory error when inserted in camera. other cards work in camera. card is recognized by laptop. tried reformatting by Vista

There are no 8GB SD cards. Cards this size are SDHC (High Capacity). SD and SDHC cards fit the same slots, but many cameras won't work with the SDHC cards. SDHC is not backwards compatible.

Please check if the Computer supports SD card of larger capacity.
If preinstalled OS is Windows XP Operating System, supports SD card from 512 MB to 2 GB max and does not support SDHC card.
Windows Vista and Windows 7 Computer supports SD and SDHC card upto 8 GB to 16 GB,.

I am unable to un-protect the memory card on my panasonic DMC=LZ5 camera. The same card had been in the camera and in use and suddenly it became protected. How do I get it back to normal (unprotected)?

The manual for Panasonic DMCLZ5 [ date: 20060223 ]

When you are using a
SD Memory Card
•On this unit, you can use SD Memory
Cards of the following capacity (from 8 MB
to 2 GB).
The SD Memory
Card is equipped with a Write-Protect
switch E that can inhibit writing and
formatting a card. (When the switch is slid
to the [LOCK] side, it is not possible to
write or delete data on the card and
format it. When the switch is unlocked,
these functions become available.)
