Question about Acer TravelMate 2300 Notebook
Thanks but i've already tried to adjust this by dropping the res to 800 and down to 16 bit. Also, this happens in both linux and windows o/s. The screen was running fine for a while then would kick in with the funky colours for a while. Sometimes it sorts itself out immediately, other times its for hours. It's almost as if the grphics is on its way out. Presumably all i can do is replace the board. Just a note, the dc jack was damaged and was repaired (rather shoddily) using a wire from the bottom to the top of the board. All I can think of is that the connection is touching/arcing onto the graphics on the motherboard? As yet i've still to hook it to another screen (I tried b4 but by the time I did the colours sorted themselves out). Any other suggestions would be helpful.
Most laptops use graphics that are integrated on the motherboard. These graphics use a large integrated circuit which is connected to the motherboard by BGA., this stands for "ball and grid assembly" There may be 200 + connections of this type under a graphics IC. It is probably an intermittent failure of one of these connections. They are not usually repaired - replacing the motherboard is the usual option. However if using an external monitor there are the same display problems - then it is almost certainly the problem I have described. Flexing the board when the DC connector was replaced could have contributed to the problem - or if the wire added was causing the motherboard not to sit properly down - fitting the motherboard screws could cause the board to flex by the BGA chips.
I am supplying this information as you required more knowledge on graphics failure. This information should be useful. We depend on you rating the assistance given. I would appreciate a good rating - as it is very difficult to fix a particular item when we are asked general questions - I hope having some idea of BGA circuitry will explain matters. Please rate this solution.
