Question about Dometic Rooftop RV Air Conditioner
It sounds like your compressor is overheating and going out on internal overload. It takes awhile for the compressor to cool back down before the overload resets itself and allows the compressor to attempt to restart. This could be a refrigerant problem that could be costly. However, it is very likely to be something less expensive also. First, open up the control section and look for any wiring or connections that appear damaged, loose, or overheated and correct as necessary. The compressor will use a capacitor. When these capacitors fail, they will cause the compressor to overheat and go out on overload. Test your capacitor and replace as necessary. Of course there are a wide range of items that can cause this problem, but these are the very most common (and least expensive) solutions that you can check yourself. The capacitor can be taken to a shop that carries this part and they should gladly test it for you.
If you have low refrigerant or a locked up compressor, it will be costly and you will need to decide (based on age & condition) whether it is more beneficial to you to repair or replace your unit.
Without being onsite with toolbox in hand, I hope this has been very helpful to you moving forward. :-)
