They will have wiring information for each of their products.

The wiring diagram should appear on side of unit.
This 1.5 Hp motor can be wired for 115 or 230 volts

My AO Smith manual would not be specific to your motor.
With AO Smith 115-230V, there are one set of wiring terminals for incoming wires from breaker box. The other wires connect to terminals.

Wire and breaker size:
For 120Volt, use 20 amp breaker and 12 gauge wire up to 25 feet.
Over 25 feet up to 100 feet, use 30 amp breaker and 10 gauge wire.
100-150 feet use 8 gauge wire and 40 amp breaker.
150-200 feet use 6 gauge wire and 50 Amp breaker.

Wiring a 230/115 1 hp 56y pool pump motor

please verify the name plate to be 115 230 volt motor.there will be a schematic that shows you exactly how to hook up this motor depending on the voltage being supplied to it. The main thing is switching between 115 and 230 volts this is a selector switch this very easily forgotten about. Please make sure to check that and double check that to make sure its on the proper selected switch. Good luck

A thumbs up would be greatly appreciated if this answer is helpful to your free Fixya question

Have 2 black wires n 1 green is this 115 0r 220 volts n where do wires go l1 or l2

The TWO Black Wires are Phase and neutral and it's irrelevant which way they go on the motor, the Other is the earth and that MUST connect to the case.
Black, L1 & L2 the other green EARTH.
115 or 120 doesn't matter

The pump is wired for 110.after it runs for 3-5 minutes it starts to smoke. It can be used at 110 or 220.Is it wired wrong?

Thank you for posting your question here on Fixya.com.

The nameplate on the side of the motor will show how the wires inside the motor are to be oriented for whatever line voltage you are supplying to the motor. The wires you bring in as line leads go to the same posts no matter if you are hooking up to 115 or 230 Volt 1~ AC power. Be certain you have your two line wires and your ground wire where they need to be and that the motors internal wires are set for 120. Most motors are shipped setup for 230 so if this is a new pump and you did not rearrange the internal connections for 115 it is likely the cause of your problem.

If this answer does not fix your problem, please comment with additional details prior to rating the answer. Positive feedback is appreciated once your problem is solved!

Wire Hayward Super Pump for 115

If you look closely, you should see a small arrow on the black plastic piece on the terminal block(jumper). That arrow lines up with either the 115 or 230 mark on the white terminal board. Make sure it is aligned with the 115.

Then put you two line wires on. It does not matter which wire goes to line 1 and line 2, just be sure you DO NOT put them both on the same terminal. A plastic divider usually seperates the two line connection terminals.
