Need More information. Have you tried to move the eunit switch lever into a different position? Most Lionel eunit engines have a small flat metal arm sticking out either on the top or underneath. With the lever set in one direction, the train will cycle forward-neutral-reverse-neutral or forward-reverse-forward. If , for example, you had shut off the engine while the eunit was in reverse and moved the switch the other way, it woulod lock the engine in reverse until you moved it back.

Have you changed transformers? You can also make a Lionel run in opposite direction by using the throttle control...just go to stop and then to power and then back to no stop and right to power. That often works.

You have to try resetting the system. First turn the breaker off for the condenser and wait about 20 seconds. After you turn it back on the system should reset.

Alaska Railroad #71 Problem

Before disassembling check the brushes (metal contacts) are making good contact with the loco wheels and are not blocked with fluff etc. Ensure the loco wheels are clean and shiny so that they pick up the track voltage ok. The brushes are made of sprung metal and transfer the voltage from the wheels via the track to the motor. Check that as well as clean and fluff free that they also have a strong springiness against the wheels for good electrical contact. If these appear ok then remove the loco bodywork and check the motor. You can apply a 12v supply directly to the motor contacts to test if it's running ok. If it does run ok then suspect the brushes and associated connections. If it does not run try moving the motor armature manually. If it is stuck it is probably time to replace it. If it moves apply a light machine oil and test again.

Brio train 512

Depends what you mean by small hills? Has the loco climbed these small hills in the past without problem? A one in twelve (one inch climb for every twelve inches travelled) incline is about as much as this loco could manage I imagine, and even less when loaded with box cars etc. Sadly the traction drive on these loco's seems to have a short life. I have heard that giving the loco a good firm solid whack down onto a hard surface may get the internal gears to settle down and get more traction. There's an average chance it might work. Do not attempt to open it up, this will create a real mess because it's just about impossible to get all the minute loaded springs back into their correct place.

My 1941 Lionel train stops getting enough power to run all the way around the track. Voltmeter says 15 volts around all track and transformer says 15 volts. How do I test engine?

If your sure the loco contacts/wheels are clean and the track is ok then remove the loco bodywork and check the motor. You can apply a 12v supply directly to the motor contacts to test if it's running ok. If it does run ok then suspect and clean the brushes and associated connections. Have you let the loco charge first? The instructions are a bit vague but the loco needs to charge before it runs. Not easily understood from the instructions and many have spent some frustrating minutes wondering why their train wouldn't move.

This is a common fault with these as the pumps rust very easily which causes them to seize.

Depending on your technical ability you could try and strip the unit and either clean or replace the pump.

I can't find any further information on a replacement pump for this model but if you do decide to strip the unit you should be able to get a Model No off the existing pump which is more than likely an ULKA..

Here's a link to instructions how to strip the unit.
