X5492 processsor 64 bit, and motherboard intel LGA771 G4182801GB ICH7/R, AMI-bios version 080015, DDR3 8GB, system power is 400W.

There are many reasons a processor runs slow. Mine does slow down often. It was built that way here.

1) If the computer does not need speed it slows down saving electricity. Check power options as Windows can have differing power options and hence slow processor and put disk drives to sleep and many chips on the mother board.

2) dusty processor, the temperature sensors have slowed the processor to stop the chip frying. Dust in the heat sink fins causes this. Solution vacuum it and dislodge dust with a small stiff paint brush.

3) Incorrect setup or incorrect power setting.

4) I assume you do have the correct setup CD/DVD ROM and it is set up and rebooted?

My HP Pavilion a1120n is running very slow I re formated it a few time over the years. Recently I added more ram and ran great till i clean it with air may , then ran very slow, so I remove some ram then...

Did you replace the hard drive? It is quite possible there is an issue with the drive at that age. YOu could try an application called "SpeedFan" or "HD Tune" and run a S.M.A.R.T test on it. This will help you determine the drive status. You can run a benchmark with "Hd Tune" and determine the speed of the drive. If you want to post your results, I will certainly help out further.

hi

maybe the time you install os you did not install properly, or you make an online windows update,
you need to check what application you installed last before you encounter that problem, if still appearing the problem got device manager and disable the "automatic shut down on system failure"

good luck

Gateway gm5442 very slow to boot, 20 to 30 minutes.

You said you tried different CPU, but it was the same motherboard, right? Maybe the motherboard speed (data bus, etc.) is just slow. Otherwise, there's not much left to try if the hard drive works OK in another computer and you've tried upgrading the memory, CPU, and power supply.

PC does not boots / does not start

Since your system reboots even if you stay in the Bios setup the problem with your system might be because of heating up of the proceesor, which might be caused if the fan CPU fan is rotating slowly or is not rotating at all. If the fan is rotating slowly change the cpu fan and try to reinstall XP

Windows is so slow

The most common reason for slow processing speed is insufficient RAM memory.

Increase the RAM, if RAM available is no more than 512MB, then it must be upgraded.

Check also your hard drive state. If you have less than 1GB free, that will slow down the system. Go to Start>>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Defregmenter and do a Defrag of the hard disk.

If you have at least 1 GB RAM, and you took care of the hard drive, then you can check the process starting up on their own and remove the useless one, or spot mala-ware that can affect speed. You can use a software like Hijack This, and search on google te function of each process started on the list reported by the software.

You can download Hijack this here MajorGeeks | If download does not start, then click at the top of the page, where it says Click Here If It Does Not.
Be careful if you delete the wrong files using this software you can harm the system, and Windows may not work properly.

If you think you have malaware you can also install Spy Bot, and do a system scan. Download Spybot from The home of Spybot.

If all the above does not work, and there is no malaware, then you usually reinstall the system.

Check also the bios settings, BIOS can downgrade the CPU speed on default , even if this is uncommon on recent BIOS.

If a computer is still slow with a fresh system and enough resources then it is one of those rare occasions when you have an hardware fault.
Hardware that can cause slow down is: RAM CPU Motherboard HD Video card.

Some tips on procedure can damage your windows installation. Do not download Hijackthis software and do not change BIOS settings and do not touch hardware unless you are sure of what you are doing.
