Open up this interactive tutorial
On the left side click on Basic Scanning. Follow the tutorial and in your case you would take black and white document or picture.
Then scan. Once you have scanned what you wanted, click on Next.
On the finish page you have the option to SAVE TO FILE, from there you can save the scanned files into your my documents folder, to do that click on the Browse, then open your my documents, and click ok, then name your file and click SAVE.
