Question about RCA Televison & Video
After the set has been on for a short while (varies from 1/2 hour to 2 hours) it produces a loud audible crack or surge and shuts down. It restarts and comes back on 30 seconds later. This is intermitted, but once it starts it continues with an increased frequency. I suspect something is overheating and shutting it down.
What to fix and how to do it - thanks
Althought RCA rear projection TVs have from one to three temperature sensors, mounted near to the lamp and on digital board, the problem here is not overheating.
When the problem is overheating, the TV will not restart by itself 30 seconds later, but it will stay on standby for an increasingly long time.
If the cracking noise is coming from the speakers, then it can be a problem on the audio circuit board. It can be caused by a faulty component (IC or capacitor) that gets charged causing the problem more frequently while the component holds charge.
When you turn off the TV for one hour, the faulty circuit will discharge completely, and will be able to work for longer time before crashing.
If the noise sounds like caused by impact, it can be caused by a faulty color wheel.
The fault is not common and the TV must be taken apart and inspected by a technician to find the fault.
As a first step I suggest calling RCA at the number listed on the owners manual. If they can offer an affordable repair, better getting an on site technician to work on TV.
