Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Everytime I log in, my Norton 360 firewall tells me that Rule "Default Block UPnP Discovery" blocked (192.168.1.1), Port ssdp (1900) inbound UDP packet. 192.168.1.1 is the IP address of Orange Livebox through which I connect to the internet. First, what exactly is a UDP packet and, second, would it be too risky to disable the Rule to find out? Thanks in advance.

Hi,

UDP means "User datagram Protocol" in shortly. It is a protocol of communications. It offers a limited amount of service when messages are exchanged between computers in a network that uses the Internet Protocol (IP).

It is an alternative to the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). UDP uses the Internet Protocol to actually get a data unit (datagram) from one computer to another.
UDP provides port number to distinguish different user requests and verify that the data arrived intact.

I advice you not to disable if you have Norton Internet Security Software packet. I also use Norton and I prefer not to disable it.

Hope this helps.

But I noticed that you ask if it is too risky to disable it or not. Norton uses the also TCP protocols, thats why if you disable the UDP protocol it will not be too risky as you may think.

    (But I don't prefer as I said)

    Good luck.

    Tip

Speedup uTorrent client with Norton and McAfee Firewall Tweaking

Make sure that the following are set in your NIS to ensure that peers can connect to you and prevent intrusion prevention warnings.

Make sure uTorrent is added to the NIS firewall and contains these two rules:
    1. Inbound Rule to permit TCP and UDP connections from any computer
    2. Outbound Rule to permit TCP and UDP connections to any computer
You must also make sure that you deselect the following in the Advanced Security Settings this is required even if the port forward test gives a positive result.
    1. Stealth Blocked Ports
    2. Invalid TCP Destination Port
    3. Invalid TCP Source Port
In Norton you must also Deselect MS Windows H.323 BO (2) signatures on the Intrusion Prevention Signature Exclusions page of the Intrusion Protection Advanced Configuration

How to Disable the Netgear Router Firewall how-to-disable-the-netgear-router-firewall.gif To disable the Netgear Router Firewall, add a new rule that allows all access from the outside to the inside.
To do this, type the router's address (the default is either 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1) in the Web browser
Enter the username and password in the prompt that appears. The default username is admin and the default password is password.
From the main menu, choose Security -> Rules
Add a new rule for Inbound Services with a service name of "ANY" and an action of "ALLOW always."
Then, move the new rule up until it is the first rule in the Inbound Services section.
Finally, make certain that this rule is enabled by checking the Enable column.
The Netgear Router firewall is now disabled and the internal network is now completely unprotected and open to attack from the Internet.

PlayStation 3 keep getting nat type 3 when need type 2

    Hi
I was having problems with my PS3 as well I did the following

    updated firmwire

Also I assign static ip address on my PS3 and forward ports used by PS3 to static IP address of PS3 on routers firewall.

    Ports used by PS3:
    udp 3478
    udp 3479
    udp 3658
    tcp.domain (port 53)
    udp.domain (port 53)
    tcp.http (port 80)
    tcp.https (port 443)
    udp.ssdp (port 1900)
    tcp.amandaBackupInitiation (10080)
    tcp.Jabber SSL/TLS (port 5223)
    tcp.10075
    tcp.10078
    tcp.10079

If your still getting problems configure the PS3 to be in your DMZ.

DMZ will be under applications and gaming. Just look for that setting in your routers setup page and add your PS3 IP address to it.

I can play online with with my xbox 360 with some friends but not others. I think it may be because of my nat.

Verify you have uPNP enabled on the router and that should do the trick.

Your router may not support it, so if not, you can setup a port fowarding rule for TCP port 3074 to forward to the IP address of your xbox 360

Firewall settings blocking internet from Live. I know which ports need to be open, but i dont know how to open them (I have a U.S Robotics router)

You must do port forwarding now to resolve the firewall problem. Call xbox on what port you must forward on the router's admin page for the xbox live. If I remember it correctly, xbox live uses port 3074 TCP and UDP, 88 TCP and UDP, 53 TCP and UDP, 80 TCP and UDP

DFL-210, follow example to block web site

i have the same problem....try this
In order to enable port forwarding you need to create two rules on the DFL-210. The first rule is for service to Static Address Translation (SAT) and the second rule is for Network Address Translation (NAT) to Static Address Translation.
The first rule is created using the following steps:
    • Under Rules/IP Rules/wan_to_lan add a new rule
    • Under the general tabName = enter desired nameAction = SAT
      • Service = Select the desired service
      • Schedule = Select the desired schedule or None
      • Source interface = any
      • Source Network = all-nets (you specify a specific inbound address or range)
      • Destination Interface = core
      • Destination Network = wan_ip3. Under SAT tab
    • Under the SAT tab
      • check destination IP address
      • New IP Address = the address you want to forward to
      • New Port = the port you want to forward to
      • Create the rule by clicking OK.
The second rule is created using the following steps:
    • Under Rules/IP Rules/wan_to_lan add a new rule
    • Under the general tabName = enter desired nameAction = Allow
      • Service = Select the desired service
      • Schedule = Select the desired schedule or None
      • Source interface = any
      • Source Network = all-nets (you specify a specific inbound address or range)
      • Destination Interface = core
      • Destination Network = wan_ip
Create the rule by clicking OK.
Activate the configuration by using the Configuration/Save and Activate menu item.

    Port Forwarding

Instructions for DG834, DG834G, DG824M, FR114W, FM114P, FR114P, FR328S, FVL328, FVS328, FVS338, FVX538, FWAG114, FWG114P, or FVS318v3 These routers do port forwarding by assigning port numbers to a "service" associated with the application you want to run. "Rules" are set for particular services. Rules block or allow access, based on various conditions such as the time of day and the name of the service. To Create a New Inbound or Outbound Rule 1. Submit the router's address in an Internet browser. (The default is 192.168.0.1). 2. Enter the router's username and password. 3. From the main menu, click Security > Rules. 4. Click Add for inbound or outbound traffic, as appropriate to the application you are planning to run. 5. Select the Service. The services the router knows about are listed in the drop down. If the service you want is not listed, add it as described in the next section. 6. Select the Action, for example ALLOW always. 7. For Send to LAN Server, enter the IP address of the local server. Note that this is also the IP address the computers on your LAN will access. 8. For WAN User choose Any, or limit access to particular IP addresses. 9. For Log selection it is reasonable to turn logs on, especially at the beginning when you are unsure of the result of the changes you are making. Later, you may want to set logs to "Never" for performance reasons. 10. Click Apply. As noted in user manual for some models: * Consider using the Dynamic DNS feature on the Advanced menu, so that external users can find your network when the DHCP lease is renewed by your ISP. * If your own LAN server uses DHCP, and your IPs change on rebooting, consider using the Reserved IP Address feature in the LAN IP menu. To Add a Service for These Routers 1. Click Security > Services > Add Custom Service. 2. Enter any name you choose for the service. 3. Select whether the service is to use TCP or UDP. If you are unsure, select both. 4. Enter the lowest port number used by the service. 5. Enter the highest port number used. If the service uses only one port number, enter the same number. 6. Click Apply.
