You will have to get into the gearbox. It isn't too hard but is time consuming. Sounds like the drive for the tiller has broken. Could just be the chain in the gearbox for the tiller drive.

I too had one that would pop out of gear while tilling. You could hold the lever in but that would eventually bend the shifting fork in the transmission and it would then jump out of the groove in the shifting sleeve. I put new pins on the shifting fork and reinforced it so that it would not bend so easily. It worked fine for a few minutes and then jumped out of gear again. A friend led me to the real solution. The shifting fork is not supposed to hold the shifting sleeve in gear. It is only supposed to slide the shifting mechanism and the detent spring and ball are supposed to do the holding work. I once again repaired the shifting fork but this time ordered a new detent spring part number 932-0863 and a new detent ball part number 741-0862. They cost $4.40 and that was the solution to the problem. I would also order a new shifting fork if yours has been bent. The new ones are a different design that has more reinforcement. It is a lot of work to tear into these so buy the new parts the first time. I was getting adept at the process after doing it three times.

I have a Yard Machine rear tine tiller that has sat unused for 4 years. I replaced the engine and while in goes forward and backward, when I engage the tines they won't rotate and the engine bogs

Transmission/differential.
Perhaps the unit sat for 4 years because the tines would not turn and your replacement engine has not solved the real problem.
I'd say disassemble the chain case to discover what's locking the tine drive.

It is the shift fork in the transmission. Bad part design and if you plan to take it apart, use sandpaper and really clean the wheel axle and tine axle before you take it apart.

MTD series 410 rear tine tiller drive wheels slip

I have the same issue with one I am working on. It appears the keys in the drive shaft are not rotating far enough out on the drive gear side to fully engage in the gear. I have studied and studied this and so far I have been unable to determine why. If I find out I will let you know. I am also trying to figure out what is supposed to pull these keys out of the till engagement gear.

Broken clutch cable connector, MTD Tiller

I found micro fiche on jackssmallengines.com . Click on the manufacturer's tab at the top of the page then you'll have the option to use an off-site tool to locate your machine. I used it and found my 1990 mtd rear tine tiller. I needed the cable that engages the tines - maybe the same as you. The part number for my 1990 model's cable was 746-0535. Dont know if it was still the same in 96 to 98. But look at the fiche and see.

the tines are usually connected with shear bolts designed to break away when u hit something as a safety precaution so that u dont break anything in the transmission. its common that people dont know this and replace them with normal bolts. if this was done and the tines are not moving now chances are uve got a snapped gear shaft
