Machine fills with water and then the water just sits there. The only way the machine will do anything is if I turn the knob to drain and spin, the water will drain and the machine will spin. Please advise.
If the timer doesn't advance from either position, then its your timer motor and you will need to trace the power to the motor off the timer,if it has power then the motor is defective and you need to replace the timer unit

check the pump to see if anything is clogged in there or you could have a bad pump, open the door and look around the opening and you'll see the full model number.also if it stops at the rinse cycle does it fill with water and the water is in there but doesn't drain or are the clothes just sitting there wet, because when in rinse the machine just uses cold water and if the valve is clogged or filling slowly the washer will stop after like 6 minutes, does any error codes come up?you can try to start the washer just on cold water and see if the water fills slowly or if it comes in normally,if it comes in slow most likely that will be your problem,if it is the pump you can get a shop vac and suck out the water from the drain hose, get it as close to the floor as you can and it will work better, then remove the center part of the pump, the clean out and see if it's filled with stuff, turn it slowly, when water comes out vac it up with shop vac until it stops.hope this helps you out.
If your washing machine will not fill, only hot or cold will fill or is slow tofill then read these tips. I have covered many of the things that can happen inthese tips...
Need a model but check the lid switch on right side a little opening under the lid. push with a small screw driver and see if you hear a click, maybe a bad lid switch.
try the
Lid switchIf the lid switch is defective, your washer can't spin and may not function at all. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washer to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it. Some machines have a special lid-switch fuse near the lid switch, inside the control panel. If this fuse blows, the unit won't fill with water until you replace the fuse. or your motor coupling could have broken!
bad inlet water valve --turn water supply off and watch to see if machine continues to fill with water --suggest removing inlet water lines from machine and inspect the strain screens on the machine for sediment build up if so clean
Does it fill with "cold" water? Will it spin?Drain? If the machine will fill up with cold water, will the timer advance by itself to finish?Or if you place the timer in spin cycle will it spin?First off if your not getting "Cold" water to fill inside :Replace the water valve (because when the timer stops after the agitation cycle it wont advance because it cant fill up with cold water.
