I have a HP Pavilion Slimline running Windows 7. I had to replace the motherboard with ASUS F2A55 - MLK. Now I get a 'Configuration Error' when I boot-up.

HI,

You cannot just replace the motherboard and then install the same Hard Drive and expect it to work. It CAN work, but you have to prep your Hard Drive before you switch motherboards.

Your Operating System, if already installed on your Hard Drive, is configured/locked to your old motherboard. You would have to run SYSPREP or some other software on your COMPLETE system before switching out your motherboard, to UNBIND all the hardware and drivers already installed in your Operating System. This would make it ready to be installed in a new computer system... which yours is with a motherboard change.

The only option that I am aware of is to completely reinstall your Operating System from scratch... however, if your old motherboard is still functional, you might be able to put your old system back together and then run the appropriate software (search online), which could save you some time.

Configuration data stored in the CMOS doesn't match the PC's actual hardware. Run the BIOS setup utility to confirm the proper configuration values. Configure the correct value.

Howt do i get to my Bios

Hi,

In order to get into your BIOS you usually need to press either the "DEL" key or the "F2" key whilst the PC/Laptop is booting up.

You should press this key as soon as your terminal switches on and before any operating system starts to load up.

I hope this helps,
John

My computer time and date keeps resetting itself to a different time. I'm connected to the internet but that is all. Why does it do this?

the clock microchip inside you motherboard is run by a small lithium battery model # CR2032 ( the size of a small coin) this is embeded in the motherboard, this can be replaced with a new one by removing the PC's cover and looking for it on the motherboard .....once replaced the clock can be re-set to the current time....once the machine displays the Desktop screen....

I have a vostro 200. The motherboard (G33m02 has gone bad. Can i replace it with any standard motherboard or is specially designed to fit in the slim case.

ok, theoretically you could put whatever motherboard you want into it, But if you don't buy the same motherboard then your windows key / license is technically invalid,

As a technician i run into this alot, If your license came with the computer then it needs to remain with that computer, You can not legally put that operating system with that coa code onto another computer, If you are replacing the motherboard with a different motherboard then it is now a different computer and therefore not allowed,

That said. there are ways around it but again not legal, If you added the operating system yourself from a retail package then you can transfer it to a different computer,

Also when you replace the motherboard if you don't have the same one, then your computer may not boot anyways because the hardware configuration will be different and windows may not load..

My suggestion buy the same motherboard used on ebay or take it to your local computer shop.

When the computer boots up the fans start but i can't get a signal on the monitor and the computer does not beep

- You need to reseat all of your hardware inside the system like hard drive power and data cable,as well as the dvd drive cable, reseat also the video card and power supply cables. Make sure that you will tigthen the video cable screws. after this step- turn the system on.

-If the monitor does not response from anything, try using different monitor so we copuld isolate the issue.

Password

that is because the password in question that you are trying to get past is the BIOS password most likely. Verify that your computer is turned off, remove power cord from back of computer, and find the jumper near the Bios chip on the motherboard. It will usually be close to the battery ( another option, temporarily remove the battery for about 30 seconds, then replace the battery into its proper position ). Be careful when you do this as some battery sockets are a pain to work with. Anyway in nearly all cases, the Bios reset jumper is located very close to both the battery and the bios chip ( firmware ). Removing the Bios reset jumper and positioning it one pin over from the initial position will usually reset the bios and get rid of the bios password requirement. Always put the bios reset jumper back into its initial position before re-appying power to the motherboard. Be careful not to leave anything loose lying around on the motherboard or in the case, else you might fry the motherboard..
Once you have successfully managed to get past the Bios password, then you should see the computer start to boot up normally and prior to Windows boot up and in the Bios routine you can configure the computer to boot to CD first. In many more modern situations, the motherboard is already configured that way.
