Question about Computers & Internet

Dell Dimension 2400 when picked up from friend computer would not load windows. 1st Attempt to Fix -cleaned and formatted hard drive by connecting drive to another computer and exploring as slave. -installed back in Dimension 2400, formatted when installed XP SP3 -install took approx. 20 hours!! -booted in safe mode and installed all current drivers (retrieved from dell website) -ran incredibly slow, CPU constantly spiked at 100% -upgraded from standard ram (512mb) to 1gb (512mbx2) -didn't seem to affect speed (Windows bootup takes approx. 10 mins and computer runs too slow to be considered usable) 2nd attempt to fix -left with 1gb of ram -changed to another HD (thinking I might have a corrupt HD causing speed issues) -XP sp3 install again took over 12 hours -computer will boot but still incredibly slow!!! Please help me! I cannot figure this out. I am a moderate computer user with enough knowledge to build and repair most PCs. I cannot seem to figure out what is causing this computer to be so slow. I do not know how the computer ran before my first attempt to fix but that the computer was at least usable. What would cause this computer to run so slow even after several clean installs? And why are my installs taking so ridiculously long? I have used my boot disk on tens of other computer and never had any issues with speed at all. Could it be CPU? MOBO? HD? RAM? Power Supply?

Attempting to change ribbon connector and see if this helps at all. I cannot accept the fact that the hard drive is bad or going to be bad soon as I have installed on two completely different hard drives with the same results.

Ive downloaded and updated all the current drivers from the Dell website. Installed everything in safe mode and computer still runs incredibly slow. For instance, copying about 5 gb of data from hd to desktop took over 4 hours. Any other suggestions?

Do I change the Cpu mode under the BIOS?

  • kyle_lee233 May 04, 2010

I have tried several hard drives and the problems continues no matter what hard drive i use.

  • kyle_lee233 May 04, 2010

Hard drive has been changed and problems still exist. I am starting to wonder if there is an issue with the cpu or mobo. But I have never had a problem with the cpu or mobo and the computer would still work but just very slowly.

When you reinstalled the HD, did you replace the ribbon cable? And a silly question, is it connected correctly?

Check out your bios settings maybe the cpu speed is set slow or incorrect also the optical drive may be going bad try replacing with a good one and see if that improves install time just make sure to go thru the bios and make sure the settings are all correct you could also try resetting the bios on the motherboard look for the jumper that will reset the bios that could help. hope you can get it runing :)

Hello,

the problem is obviously from the hard drive. The hard drive has a lot of bad sectors on it and that's what's making the system very slow because the files on the hard drive will be scattered and not arranged because of the bad sectors.

I would advice that you get a new hard drive. Although you can manage the hard drive by partitioning it or defragmenting it. But the problem is that we don't know how bad the bad sectors have taken over the drive. But from the look of things, the hard drive must have been damaged to a large extent.

Its better you get another hard drive once and for all. Also you should be hearing some noise from the hard disk.

Good luck.

Hi,

Did you try to install or reinstall the motherboard drivers ? You can download them from MSI.

Hope this helps.

    Hi again,

    - Would you please try to switch the CPU from Compatible to Normal.

    - You may try to remove the battery on the motherboard , after waiting for 30 seconds replace. Restart. Set date/time. You may reinstall.

This may work for the problem.

    Waiting comments.

My Dell Dimension 2400 refuses to load Windows XP

Hi,
What happens?Does it hang on the loading page or does it restart itself before loading?
If it hangs on the loading page, press CTRL,ALT and DEL.This boots the system.
If it restarts itself, remove the hard disk and re-fix it again.Problem solved?
Remove the CMOS battery and the hard disk and re-fix them again.Problem solved?
If not,you may have to repair your operating system.
This how you do it:-
  • Remove your hard disk and enslave[fix it as a secondary drive] it on another machine with a good operating system.
  • Start the machine.Accept to run unnix[using two drives]
  • The machine will automatically detect your hard disk's failure on the operating system and repair the damaged files.
  • On completion and after Windows opens, turn off the machine and remove your hard disk.
  • Fix the hard disk now on your machine and start it.
Hope this helps.Thanks!

I wanted to wipe my entire hard drive on my old Dimension 8400 that contained windows xp on it and reinstall it with windows vista, which i have the cd for. however, when i did so, each time i try loading...

1. you will need to know 1st that the hard drive you are installing is compatible with the desktop.
2. Is the hard drive compatible with the new Operating system (VISTA).
3. Check to see if you have the hard drive properly inserted that is properly cabled and connected. This will render error in installation.
4. Make sure you are installing the Operating system correctly.
5. Some boot sectors become corrupt during a change in Operating system if the hard drive is not properly formatted.
6. Try formatting the hard drive again and re-installing.

Looks like a hard drive failure- simple as that. You can try a number of things but as far as my experiance goes the hard drive is dead. You either need a new hard drive or better a new computer.

Dont want to give false hopes...

Dell Dimension 2400 Freezes frequently

check inside the case of the computer to make sure that the interface cable between the hard drive and the motherboard are fully connected. Also check to see if the RAM modules are fully inserted into their slots. If not, they try removing them one by one, until the computer starts up faster. If this doesn't fix it, then try a new hard drive, and interface cable.
