Question about Motorola DCP-501 Receiver

Motorola DCP-501 ****ACTIVATION*****

Just bought my DCP 501 from an on-line company. I was out on a fishing trip when it arrived, so my son saw fit to set it up and suprise me upon my return..... However he did a scan for channels, which clearly warns not to in the set up, for digital customers.
Needless to say.... I truely was suprised when I returned home. I have been able to get the receiver to out put a few of my channels, but nothing digital and after calling the company I purchased it from, I can not a response from them.

HELP!!! If anyone would know what I can do to reset or undo what my teenager did.....

I went through the same thing. Called Motorola and they had me do a "factory reset". This is done by putting it in CABLE TV mode, then holding down the four buttons at the corners of the display (SETUP, AUDIO MODE, PRESET DOWN-ARROW, TUNE DOWN ARROW) for 8 seconds. Then I had to call Comcast to have it "provisioned".

This is definitely a rip off. I ordered it from Infonet.(INPHOME) (BEWARE: DO NOT ORDER THEM. You'll be sorry.)

Before I ordered it, the technical support person told me just hook it up and it should work and I should see all channels (premium, ppv, etc) and it is my responsibility to tell my cable company because cablew company will not know about the box and cannot program the box. He even asked me to look at a testimony (video clip) on their site.

When I received it and don't see those digital channels, I contacted them and they told me I have to contact my cable company and give the serial number so they can send the signal to it. I contact them right away the next day and they told me I have to pay restocking fee, insurance, etc, which is about half of cost of the unit. Why will someone return it if they will only get less that half of it. This is really a scam.

This unit is just using up my storage space now.

If someone know what to do to get around this, please post it here.

To the person who posted solution #2.

The company selling them claims that the box is fully activated and will get all the channels 1-999. They also make it sound as if the box they sell can very easily steal cable tv and you could very, very easily get away with it undetected. This info is very tempting (most importantly misleading) for most people, whether they will admit it or not. It could happen to anybody. It's basically taking advantage of good/decent citizens on the account of a weakness we all have - temptation.

Now having said that they not only trick you and take advantage of you, but they are also braking the law.

They are totaly misleading their customers into buying something they did not pay for, which is illegal.
Killing people is illegal, but that doesn't give the gun-store a right to sell fake guns and claim they work.

I bought one of these boxes, and not only that the box didn't work, but when I tried to activate it, my cable company (comcast) didn't know how to do it, couldn't do it, and even if they knew how, they said, they still wouldn't do it.

So I've decided, whatever it takes, I will get even with them.
I will reverse the payment charge and keep the box too.

I disagree, it's not a ripoff. Mine does everything it's supposed to, and does it quite well. Before you can receive any digital channels, it has to be activated by Comcast. Most Comcast employees will tell you that it's illegal to own your own cable box, and that even if they did activate it, it wouldn't work. Both statements untrue. After several attempts, I spoke to a supervisor, who referred me to their legal department, and the next day the box was working fine.

Guess i was right its a rip off

Of course, call your cable company. What do you want to do? Steal cable TV, while the rest of us have to pay for it?

What will cause disc error on the motorola dcp 501

Either a dirty laser, faulty tracking mechanism, or a weak laser(aging) will cause unit to mistrack. When this happens the mechanisms are replaceable and not repairable.

DVD Player won't work

DVD's: does it display any kind of error? All DVD's?

To your second question.

The manual explains cable and TV hookup for CABLE but there is no mention of off-air TV tuning.

If you don't have the manual go to:
http://www.retrevo.com/support/Motorola-DCP501-Receivers-manual/id/393bh936/t/2/ and register to get it. It's free.

Motorola DCP-501 and PPV

It takes registration of the unit to receive them and it would be unethical and illegal to post a way to hack them here...

The clear protective film on the DCP501 display must be removed and transferred to the inside back cover of your
DCP501 Home Theater System User Guide. The Unit Address and Serial Number found on the protective film is
required for activation of your DCP501 cable TV receiver by your cable TV service provider.

Try Motorola’s Customer Support Center at 1-866-668-2271 or 1-866-MOT-BCS1. You didn't disconnect the short cable between the RF IN and TO RF IN ports, right?
