I have a 47" Visio 1080p. Tv is always set at hdmi

AV inputs are for standard analog video which is 480i. HDMI and Component inputs are the high definition inputs that run at either 1080i or 1080p You won't ever get 1080i or p through AV inputs.

Is this projector high def

HI,
Its not an HD (1080p) projector. So it will not be able to show HD picture. In HD projectors there will be an input named HDMI( High-Definition Multimedia Interface ).This projector able to Show picture up to a resolution 1080i (HDTV) Though component video input.

Won't broadcast in hi-def with component cables

I have a BENQ PE8700 also. Charter Cable just replaced my Hi Def Cable Box and now I only get the non hi-def channels. I get the sound on the Hi-Def channels only. My projector is hooked up with the DVI Cable. Did you ever find out why you were not getting HI DEF?

What cables do I need to connect my toshiba satellite m55 laptop to my hi def tv?

This really depends on the connectsionon your hi def TV. The laptop doesn't have an HDMI port (these ports carry sound and video in one cable), but it does have a VGA out port as well as a s-video out.

You can connect an s-video cable from your laptop to your hi-def TV, if the TV has an s-video input port.

You can also purchase a VGA to Component converter if your hi-def TV has component inputs, these are the Red, Green, Blue inputs. Amazon sells these, here is a link: http://www.amazon.com/Premium-VGA-Component-Cable-Black/dp/B000RJLSZU

If you have a DVI input you can purchase a VGA to DVI converter as well. These are very inexpensive and you can find a wide selection on Amazon, here: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=vga+to+dvi

Finally, you can also purchase a VGA to HDMI converter. This would be the most expensive option, but you can use this box to put both sound and video from the laptop onto the HDMI cable. YOu would need both the converter and cable for this to work. Converter is here: http://www.amazon.com/VGA-Audio-HDMI-Converter-Adapter/dp/B0015YWV1G/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1263068538&sr=1-3
Cable is here: http://www.amazon.com/HDMI-meter-foot-cable-1080P/dp/B0002L5R78/ref=pd_bxgy_e_img_b

Powersurge made my HD setting revert to low def.

Your TV plays High Def material through either Input 4 (uses component cables R,G,B) or through Input 5 (Uses DVI cable).
Today most equipment uses HDMI cable for High Def or it may have a component (RGB) output that you can use. The DVI hookup is best, so you need a HDMI to DVI cable or Component Cables (Red, Green, Blue). You need some source that OUTPUTS High def (ex. 1080i) either through HDMI or component cable. You need to either connect the component cable(R,G,B) from the source to the Input 4 on the TV or connect the HDMI to DVI cable from the source to the Input 5.
You need to set the AV source on the TV to AV5 (if you are using the DVI input) or AV4 (if you are using component cables).
If you want to play Highdef source like Blue Ray then you can just connect the output of the blu ray player to your Tv using either the HDMI to DVI cable or component cable (Red, Green, Blue) and set the TV input to AV5 (for HDMI/DVI) or AV4 (for component).
But if you are trying to get Free High Def from an antenna then you will need to have a component that can OUTPUT high def. The $40 converter boxes don't do this - they simply convert the Digital signal to Analog (non high def). What you need is a High Def TUNER that OUTPUTS High Def. I was looking for one for this same reason and ordered the centronics ZAT 502 HD. But it cost about $80. Then I saw that Tivo had an upgrade deal where I could upgrade my existing Series 2 Tivo to Tivo HD for $99. It has a High Def Tuner in it. So I cancelled my order with Centronics and got the Tivo. In any case if you want Over the air HD you will need a High Def Tuner that will OUTPUT 1080.

NON- Hi Def channels loose thier blue? color....picture is all green

Some CATV hi-def receivers are known to have issues keeping up with the datastream. Symptoms from the picture going solid black to other unpredictable video have been seen. Ask your CATV provider if they can switch your brand to another manufacturer. If your cable box has component video jacks in addition to HDMI, try that too. Some boxes will output RGB perfectly but bomb out with HDMI.

Connecting Projector to High Def Source (e.g. PS3 HDMI)

That projector supports M1-D also which is the digital side of the M1-DA... Anyway, they sell cables that are M1-D to HDMI to which you can hook directly to the PS3. They are decently priced too, less than $20. I know this thread is old, but I came across it due to an issue I am having with my xb31, broken color wheel. Trying to find parts...

You probably do not have a high def signal.  If you do have a high def signal you need to use either component input or HDMI input to get high def.  I f you are using RF input you picture would improve marginally if you swithced to a video input.
