By using a piece of wire with a hook on one end slightly bigger than the diameter of the fuel line, fish or hook the filter & fuel line out of the tank through the filler hole. then remove the filter from the end of the fuel line. Next let the fuel line fall back into the tank then pull the fuel line out of the tank from the outside. Then to replace it with a new line. It is quite a tight fit in the tank & can be a difficult to replace. This can be made a little easier if you cut the end of hose at a sharp angle then put it in the hole. If it is too tight to slide through the hole you may need to use a pair of long nose or bent pliers to pull it from the inside,pull it out the filler hole & cut the end off square then replace the filter on the end of the hose & let it slide back into the tank. It is probable a good idea to replace the return fuel line at the same time if it hose one fitted.
You need to remove the carb to do this, remove the top cover, remove the two screws holding the air filter on and remove, remove the two 10mm nuts holding the filter back plate and remove, remoce the two 7mm headed screws secuting the carb, remove the two cross head screws holding the bottom of the bracket, the bracket will now come away along with the carb, unhook the fuel hose from the carb, now grab the fuel hose through the fuel filler hole, pull the hose with the filter out through the filler hole, take a new hose, slice one end into a long taper, push the taper through the hole in the crankcase floor and into the top of the tank far enough to be able to grab the end with a pair of long nose pliers through the filler hole, pull down into the tank, trim the end and refit the filter.
If you have the correct Stihl hose , then pull air box off and will probably have to remove the 8mm nuts that hold carb on and disconnect the fuel line and fuel return line and throttle linkage. then empty the fuel tank and pull the filter off the end of the hose and remove from the top. You will have to probably make yourself a hook out of rigid wire, hanger works good, just something to hook fuel line to pull through the cap opening so you can pull filter off old hose. then insert new Stihl hose from the top and grab it from the fuel cap hose with needle nose pliers or hemostats and pull gently not cutting the hose but enough to pull hose into tank to where groment on fuel line is in place in tank, then install NEW fuel filter and make sure your return line is good, I would replace both while I'm there, then reassemble it. if it doesn;t run right you may have to pull carb back off and dissemble it and clean it cause it may have sucked dirt through the crack
The small one has the fuel filter. The other one is the return line to the tank. The return line is larger and usually have a fitting at the end of the hose and is inside the tank. Thread the new line ( large hose ) Through the hole on the right side. Thread until you can pull it out the filler hole. Install the fitting on the hose and pull it back up until the fitting hits the roof of the fuel tank (on inside of tank ) then that hose goes to the short fitting on the primer bulb. Then thread the small hose through the left hole going into the tank and pull it out the filler hole until you can install the fuel filter. Install fuel filter and pull it back until the filter rests on the edge of the filler hole. That hose goes to the right side of the carburetor. This is if you have a walbro carb. Zama also uses the right side for this hose. Hope my explanation helps. I'm working on one as well.
I'm so confused. This is reported as a Poulan and McCulloch pole saw, which one? Is it a pole saw? That is the only 445 Poulan I can find. It is reported as an electric but has a fuel routing problem.

The fuel system routing is terrible, but it is all there is.
Fuel Routing follows:
Tank to carburetor (hose in tank with filter on free end)
Carburetor to primer (primer draws fuel from the tank through the carb)
Primer to fuel tank (returns any excess fuel to tank when pushed) HTH

You have to pull the fuel line through the hole in the tank because the hole is a little smaller than the fuel line, otherwise it would leak. Use a thin piece of wire, I use a tag wire, cut the fuel line at an angle on the end, stick a hole in it then stick the wire through hole in the tank and out the cap hole. Stick the wire through the line and twist it around itself and pull the line through. Leave enough line in the tank to attach the fuel filter and attach the other end to the carb
is your fuel cap missing the hold down that keeps it from falling out of the tank.if the keeper is missing from fuel cap, the valve goes in the cap.if the cap is together then it just sticks in the fuel tank hole in the top...... hope this helps,let me know.................
