Grinding noise and agitator wont turn

I've got a Whirlpool Ultimate Care II that just started making a grinding/growling noise and the agitator won't turn. I try and turn the agitator by hand and it will barely budge and suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

If this is a Whirlpool manufactured TOP LOADER, an agitator problem can have several causes. Most commonly, this is caused by a broken motor coupling. The following link explains how you can diagnose the problem and repair:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3965207-whirlpool_top_loader_no_spin_problem

I have included parts sources and instructions on how to replace any parts as well.

If this just a simple matter of the agitator not working, but everything else does, you may just have a worn agitator cam assembly, worn agitator dogs, loose agitator bolt, or all of the above. The following link explains what agitator dogs are and how to access them:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3608577-replacing_agitator_dogs

Whirlpool manufactured washers use a split agitator design. The top half is known as the "auger, while the lower half is the agitator. Between the two pieces is a cam assembly, with small teflon teeth known as "dogs". There's also an agitator bolt that holds the entire assembly to the center post.

If the auger (top half of the agitator) is slipping, I would suspect the dogs or cam assembly need to be replaced. The part number for the dogs is included in the link I provided. For a little more you can purchase the entire cam assembly which includes the dogs, the cam, the cam seal and thrust bearing.

If the entire agitator appears loose or slipping, check the agitator bolt to ensure it is tight. DO NOT overtighten as this can restrict movement of the agitator or damage it. Tighten until snug.

Last of all, the most expensive problem that can occur, is a failed gearcase (transmission). The gearcase averages between $80 and $160 to purchase. If you wish to replace the part yourself, it is not that difficult. The following link explains how:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3576575-replacing_a_gearcase_on_whirlpool_manufa

The procedure is rather lengthy, but not as difficult as you would think. It can save you a lot in labor charges.

Replacement parts (if required) can be purchased at any of the following websites:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

All these sites are reputable and offer great service with competitive pricing, so shop and compare. The first three sites I listed also include helpful exploded view parts diagrams to assist you in locating and properly identifying the parts you need. If the model number is correct, the following part numbers you may need:

Motor Coupling 285753A
Agitator Cam Replacement Kit 285809
Agitator Dogs 80040
Gearcase 3360629

NOTE: If you replace the gearcase, replace the motor coupling as well.

If you have any questions, please post back and let me know. I hope this is helpful to you.

I have a Whirlpool Ultimate Care II washer. It fills and agitates but it will not drain or spin. When it hits the spin cycle it sounds like a timer is going off but nothing happens. Does anyone have any...

The only thing I can think of for this is a worn coupling for the motor. Does the noise sound simmilar to a grinding sound? if thee is no noise from the motor then I would suspect the timer. I have had both of these go out on me and they seem to be common problems. I hop this helps.

I have a grinding noise coming from my washer and the agitator wont turn.

Most likely source of noise is the coupling which is situated between the motor and the gearbox. Secondary fault can be the gearbox itself, but more likely to be the coupling.
Couplings are very awkward to do unless you know the 'tricks' to 'undressing' the machine.
It would probably be best to call a serviceman.
It is not a big job.
Good luck.......Nomess

Whirpool lsq9244eqo fills and drains but does not spin or agitate

It sounds like the agitator gripping teeth are worn out. To check this, take the agitator cap off with a strong knife or flat-head screw driver, pull the cap off and check the plastice teeth and four plastic hooks that grab the teeth. If they are worn out, then you will have to replace the agitator. To replace it, you will see a nut that is between the circlular teeth. Unscrew the nut and pull the agitator up hard.
