Question about Intermatic Malibu 300W Power Pack Transformer ML300RTW

1 Answer

Lights will turn on and off manually only

Transformer seems to work OK. Lights will turn on and off manually but clock is not turning anymore. Landscaper installed over 1 year ago. He also installed it in the garage. Is this considered "outdoors”? Box says Intermatic Heavyduty cannot see any numbers but casing is plastic, otherwise looks like this clock. Questions in short - does timer need to be replaced? Does placement need to be changed?

Timer lights 1 & 4 are on constantly & nothing else works. I've tried unplugging it but still no change. I bought it from garage sale (1 year ago) with no manual, it's been working great up til now

Just checking, still plugged in, fuse or circuit breaker not tripped that provides power to it? If you can turn it manually, and the dial does not turn when powered up, look for a small on/off switch, other than that, maybe it does need replacement, but they usually last longer that a year, but I have had some timers that just quit working on me too.

My 600 watt 12 volt transformer timer for out door lighting does not keep time properly. HOw do I get and install a new timer?

1) Amazon sells 600Watt power pack:
http://www.amazon.com/Malibu-8100-9600-01-Voltage-Power-Transformer/sim/B002ZRPM4A/2

2) I bought new 300Watt Malibu power pack at Home Depot about 2 months ago.
Near the lighting section.
My new power pack has electronic time clock, so no more 'slow clock.'
I think Home Depot had 600Watt.
Lowes carries different brand.

3) Manuals for power packs at Malibu lights.com
http://www.malibulights.com/customer_service/owners_manuals.aspx

4) Tips for buying and taking care of power pack:
-Match up wattage of bulbs with wattage of power pack
-15 each X 20 watt bulbs = 300 watts, so install 300Watt power pack
-Installing a 500W power pack on 300W of bulbs will burn out bulbs and power pack.
-Replace bulbs as soon as they burn out or other bulbs will burn out and power pack will burn out.
-When working on bulbs, unplug power pack or it may burn out.

5) How to install power pack.
Before unplugging old power pack, check which bulbs are not working.
Replace bulbs using phillips screwdriver.
Unplug power pack.
Notice how wires are connected to power pack, write down terminal connections.
Some power packs have three terminals ... extra terminal is for additional photoelectric eye.
Use pliers or screwdriver to disconnect wires.
New power pack has has same terminals.
Plug in power pack.
Read instruction manual before connecting wires.
Save instruction manual because a few years that manual won't be around as products change.

Had to replace a fixture today. when I replugged the lights the lights turn on manually but the clock on the timer does not advance I have 56 watts of light Is the timer broken?

If clock motor does not rotate, then some people report taking it apart and cleaning gears.
The PB912M10 timer clock motor is not sold separately. Aug 2010.
If power pack transformer still works: buy cheap plug-in timer, set power pack to override, and plug power pack into cheap timer.
With receipt, power pack might still be under warranty.

The transformer will work if I manually turn the dial. The dial will not automatically turn anymore.

If the bulbs turn on when you manually rotate dial, then the power pack has electricity.
A lot of people ask for replacement Malibu tripper pins on Fixya, and it sounds like your trippers are working fine.
If clock has stopped rotating, that means the power pack has malfunctioned, and needs to be replaced.

I did find some tips to help folks preserve their power packs:
1) Match wattage of bulbs with wattage of power pack
-15 each X 20 watt bulbs = 300 watts, so install 300Watt power pack
2) Installing a 500W power pack on 300W of bulbs will burn out bulbs and power pack.
3) Replace bulbs as soon as they burn out or other bulbs will burn out and power pack will burn out.
4) When working on bulbs, unplug power pack or it may burn out.

Malibu Light Transformer ML121RT troubleshooting

1) Disconnect the plug.
2) Remove the 3 hex screws holding the cover.
3) Make a note of all connections (taking a picture is even better).
4) Connect the black power wire to the red transformer wire.
5) Connect the white power wire to the white transformer wire.
6) Set your voltmeter to 20 or 50 volts AC (not DC and not less than 15 volts).
7) Plug the transformer in the wall.
8) Test the voltage coming from the A & B connectors at the back (polarity is irrelevant).
If you see 12 volts or thereabout, the problem is with the little switch (the one with the black and red wires that is activated by the trippers on the clock dial). I have the exact same problem but I have been unable to locate the part so I am going to try to clean the contact points and see if that works.

Intermatic ML300RTW not working

Yes this loose strands is probably the issue, the Transformer is working too hard and shuts down. you can make sure by removing all the bulbs but the last one and turning the transformer on, if it fails- you've got bad wiring. move the x-former closer to the lights so you don't have very much bad wiring.
