Kelly Thank you for replying. The engine I have is a 1990 18 hp twin II motor not the one listed. This web site would not allow me to enter the real engine. I am sorry, The engine is a 1990 B & S and I was unable to locate any oil level switch in the engine block. If it helps it is full of engine oil. I am wondering about the coil and or module. I have checked all safety switchs and the fuse is good also. the black power wire is in good condition as well.

Hello Kelly: I removed the cover to check coil and or module. I only found a coil with a grounding wire connected to it. the coil is grounded at the kill wire terminal even with the engine harness disconnected. I believe the problem to be the ignition coil itself. number 333. Thank you for your help. Have a Blessed day

Hey Kelly Just wanted to let you know that the problem was a Coil or on the part listing the armature. I found that the coil was grounded and would not fire. After replacing the coil the mower had a lot more power. this was a easy fix and I thank you for just being there to help. In a shop it is always nice to have someone to ask questions of. Thank you again.

A few more things to check.
1. The oil level. If the oil level is low the oil level sensor will ground the ignition.
2. Check the wiring from the seat safety switch to make sure it is connected.
3. Follow the black wires from the ignition control module to make sure none of them are chaffing and do not have a chassis ground.

If you still have problems disconnect ONE lead from the oil level sensor and see if you have spark. Most of the time these oil level sensors are the common failure.

I think your were close on the engine number my best guess is

Model: 422707 Type: 1516 01 Code: 91110712 This number should be on the air shroud just above one of the spark plugs. It could also be in the side of the air shroud.

Given everything you have checked we may be dealing with something as simple as a Magnatron ignition unit failure.

(Item 897 in the manual) Page 8.

This is the manual I am using:

    http://www.briggsandstratton.com/maint_r...

If memory serves me right this is an old Spirit or IC engine

Pull the upper shroud / engine cover and unhook the wire leading to the Magnatron unit from lower in the engine. Remove the spark plugs and check for spark as you crank the engine through. If you have spark at that point there is a short somewhere in the engine wiring. If you still do not have spark then the Magnatron (Ignition module) Item 897 is bad.

    Thanks for using FixYa,

I passed you some bad info... my apologies. There are 2 versions of ignition on this engine depending on manufacture date. One is electronic and the other is manual. We are talking about items 897 or 333. I hope I am not confusing you with this. What your trying to do is remove the ground / kill wire that goes to the throttle control linkage from the coil / armature / magneto to check for spark.

I am still thinking we are dealing with a kill wire issue here as you said you turned it off and then there was "no spark." All the key does is ground the ignition coil HV transformer winding so that there is not a spark output. We are trying to locate where that ground is now... and why.

Ok one more thought... if you have a multi meter... check for a bonafide ground on the black wire that goes to the ignition module. I am pretty sure is will either be a chassis ground or the actuator on the throttle control (if your mower even has it) that may have a damaged or bent tab on it. You will have to find the source of the ground to get your ignition back.

I am just pleased to have been albe to have assisted you. I have been around and fixing B & Strattons since my pre-teen years. It always makes me smile to know someone learned something and fixed the problem in the process. Now it is time to catch up on that lawn that has been on hold. Take care.

Spark plugs foul immediately

Fouled plugs may be caused by oil leaking into the cylinder. Does it smoke when running (cold), are you using up the crank oil. Black smoke is excess gas comsumption, blue smoke is oil burning. If your plug is fouled with black carbon, you are most likely running to rich.
