  1. Set up and plug in the Netgear router and wait a few seconds for it to boot up. Since the router is essentially a mini-computer, it won't work instantly when it's turned on. While it's booting, the power light should flash. When it's finished booting, the power light should stay solid.
  2. Step 5 Connect a computer to the router, either with a wireless or a wired connection. Reboot the computer to ensure it gets a new IP address from the router via Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).
  3. Step 6 Open the web interface by entering "http://192.168.1.1/" into the address bar of your web browser. If a login screen is presented, use "admin" as the username and either "1234" or "password" as the password.
  4. Step 7 Connect to the Internet, if necessary. Plug your cable modem or DSL modem into the router's WAN port in the back and run the Internet Connection Setup Wizard from the web interface.
  5. Step 8 Follow the directions and provide authentication information.
  6. Step 9 Connect more clients. At this point, clients should be able to connect and access the Internet.

How do i set up secured network?

set-secured-wireless-network-netgear-800x800.jpg Set up a Secured Wireless Network on Netgear Photo is inappropriate for this article Submit

A wireless network is comprised of a wireless router, a computer (or other wireless-enabled devices), a high-speed modem, and a subscription to an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Netgear is a popular manufacturer of wireless networking hardware that allows users to set up a secured wireless network. In order to prevent unauthorized users from logging onto your wireless network to gain access the Internet, and in order to protect the data you transmit and receive online, you should change your wireless router's security settings to create a secured wireless network.

1 Install the router. To install a Netgear wireless router, use an Ethernet cable to connect the router to the cable/DSL modem and use another Ethernet cable to connect the router to your computer. Make sure all of these devices are powered off as you connect them. Once connected, turn on the cable/DSL modem, the router, then the computer, in that order. Allow at least two minutes to pass after turning on each device to give the devices time to recognize one another

2 Log in to the router. Open a web browser and type in the router's address to load the router's settings page. The router's address can be found in the user guide or setup CD that came with your router, or you can download a user guide from Netgear's technical support page (see Resources). Most Netgear routers use one of the following addresses: http://192.168.1.1; http://www.routerlogin.net; or http://www.routerlogin.com. Press "Enter" or click "Go" in your web browser after you have entered the address.

3 Enter the router's username and password. A prompt will appear on the screen when you enter your router's address, requiring you to enter a username and password before you can access the router's settings page. The default username for Netgear routers is "username" and the password is "password." Because the textboxes are case-sensitive, you must enter both of these using all lowercase letters. Press "Enter" to log in to the router and begin changing its security settings.

4 Open the security settings menu. The router's home page has multiple links for changing settings. Find and click the "Security Settings" link to change the router's security settings.

5 Change the SSID, choose an encryption setting and create a password. The default name (or "SSID") of your wireless network will be "NETGEAR." Enter a new, memorable name for your wireless network to help detract would-be hackers from trying to access your router, as most novice computer users with unsecure networks do not know how to change the default network name or institute any other security features. Newer Netgear routers offer WPA or WPA-PSK encryption to secure your network, both of which provide high levels of security. Select either of these. encryption types and create a unique password. This will require all users to enter the password before they can log in to your wireless network. It is important that you create a complex password that has several characters, including numbers. Once you have created a password, click "Confirm Password" to save it. To exit the security settings menu and log off of the router, click "Save" or "Apply" to save the changes you made, then click "Logout" to exit the route

Things You'll Need

* Netgear wireless router
* High-speed Internet service provider (e.g., Comcast, AT&T, Insight)
* Cable/DSL modem
* 2 Ethernet cables
* Computer
* Web browser

    I have a nieghbor who has somehow found out my password. How can I change my password so he can't use it anymore.

    you can change your wireless encryption password by going to internet explorer
    http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1
    the default login/pass
    • Username = admin
    • Password = password
      • For older devices, password = 1234
    if this does not work you will need to reset your router by holding the reset button for 30 seconds or more when you power it on.
    1. Use an Ethernet cable to connect a computer to any one of the four LAN ports of the NETGEAR router.
    2. In a web browser, enter the router's IP address - either http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1 by default.
    3. When prompted for a Username and Password, enter the default username and password (admin;password) unless you have already changed it. NETGEAR recommends changing the default password to increase the security of your network.

      For Steps 4-9, refer to Figure A below.
    4. Select Wireless Settings from the Setup menu in the left-hand navigation bar.
    5. Under Wireless Network, enter your desired network name in the Name (SSID) box.
    6. Under Security Options, select WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES].
    7. Under Security Options (WPA-PSK + WPA2-PSK), enter your desired network password into thePassphrase box.
      • WRITE DOWN or KEEP NOTE of your network name, security option and passphrase - you will require them to connect wireless computers and devices to your network.
    8. Click Apply to save the settings.

    I can not connect my Netgear router to my computer though ethernet cable also could u tell me what a WPA key is please.

    Hi Kelly, Connecting the router with cable is fairly easy and hassle-free. All you have to do is connect the router and PC using CAT5 or CAT6 Patch cable and the internet should work if the cable is fine. It is indicated by the corresponding LED on the router and LAN port LEDs of PC. WPA Key is the password required to connect wirelessly to the router. User Guide for NetGear WGR614 is available for reference.

    To secure the router, first you have to access the router through web browser (Internet Explorer) by typing the IP address of your router in the address bar, which is usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 and lookup for the options to do the following: -
    1. Change the SSID (Name) of the router
    2. Change the default administrative user name and password (unless you've configured otherwise, the default username is admin and the password password.)
    (The above step would prevent unauthorized access to your router)

    Next step is to secure it:
    1.On the left-hand side, under Setup, click "Wireless Settings" 2.Under "Security Options", select your desired encryption method (preferably WPA or WPA2-PSK)
    3.Choose a Network Key - it can be anything, as long as it's 8-63 characters in length
    4. Click Apply

    Now your router and your connection would become secure and the user has to provide the network key (WPA) to access the internet.

    Ihave bought a new Dell laptop and want to connect it wirelessly to my netgear router but have lost the security code to do it.

    While directly connected to your router by an Ethernet cable type 192.168.0.1 into your browser window(Internet Explorer/Firefox). You will then be directed to a sign in page for the router. If this information has not been changed it should be the following: username: admin and password: password(both will be in lowercase letters). If you are unable to get signed in with this information and do not know the username and password then you will need to press the reset button on the back of the router for 5-10 seconds. Then this username and password will work. After getting signed into the router you will then click wireless setting on the left side. This page will should you the all of your network information including the name, security information and the password which will be listed as either passphrase or key. The passphrase or key will be the password you will enter once you select your network name to connect to. This following link has the full manual for your Netgear router in case you do not have it.
