However totally eronious!
The reason that the GPS does not see any satellites is usually beacuse
1) the battery is too low to receive and interprete the signal.
Ensure the battery is fully charged by AC rather than car DC.prior to use.
2) The GPS is shileded inside a building or within an area that it has no clear view of the sky.
Move the GPS outside or to a location it has clear unobstructed access to the sky and is also clear of any interference like computers high tension wires etc.
3) The SIIRF chipset has been compromisewd by plugging the unit in when starting the engine, This is the quickest way to damage a GPS or mobile phone. This type of damage requires total replacement of the mother board and often exceeds the value of the GPS.
Age of maps have no bearing on whether a GPS is able to access satellites.
Yes it can be very much possible that the gps device is not getting satellite signals due to older version of map.update the gps device with its latest firmware updates for maps then check out.also other possible reasons for this problems are are inbuilt antenna in the gps device is got weak there are external gps antenna available in the online sites like radio-shack and best-buy shops.but if the antenna is not the problem then it can be problem in the battery of the gps.the battery is got weak.the battery needs replacement in this case.but if the battery is also not the problem then check out if the no or low signal problem is only at one place or every where.if there are tall buildings and trees covering the gps or its in the packed room or car.then it looses signals sometimes..in this case it has to be placed directly facing towards the open sky.where the space is wide open then check out.it will start catching the signal.but as per you question if nothing helps then yes the older map version in the device is definitely one of the reason for no signal in the device.
this will help.please do rate the solution.keep updated for any further assistance if more help required.thanks.
Testimonial: "very detail explaination. Thanks so much"
This happened to me. I was looking at the unit and a pop up appeared to ask if it should continue searching for satellites. I clicked on 'No' and could not get a signal thereafter. After a lot of searching on how to turn the search back on, I eventually reset the unit by doing: Tools, Settings, System, Restore and this fixed the problem. Good luck (although the post is 11 years old, Lol!)
