My garmin 250w does not get satellite signals. Is it because my map is an older version? It is Europe NT 2008

However totally eronious!

The reason that the GPS does not see any satellites is usually beacuse
1) the battery is too low to receive and interprete the signal.
Ensure the battery is fully charged by AC rather than car DC.prior to use.
2) The GPS is shileded inside a building or within an area that it has no clear view of the sky.
Move the GPS outside or to a location it has clear unobstructed access to the sky and is also clear of any interference like computers high tension wires etc.

3) The SIIRF chipset has been compromisewd by plugging the unit in when starting the engine, This is the quickest way to damage a GPS or mobile phone. This type of damage requires total replacement of the mother board and often exceeds the value of the GPS.

Age of maps have no bearing on whether a GPS is able to access satellites.

Yes it can be very much possible that the gps device is not getting satellite signals due to older version of map.update the gps device with its latest firmware updates for maps then check out.also other possible reasons for this problems are are inbuilt antenna in the gps device is got weak there are external gps antenna available in the online sites like radio-shack and best-buy shops.but if the antenna is not the problem then it can be problem in the battery of the gps.the battery is got weak.the battery needs replacement in this case.but if the battery is also not the problem then check out if the no or low signal problem is only at one place or every where.if there are tall buildings and trees covering the gps or its in the packed room or car.then it looses signals sometimes..in this case it has to be placed directly facing towards the open sky.where the space is wide open then check out.it will start catching the signal.but as per you question if nothing helps then yes the older map version in the device is definitely one of the reason for no signal in the device. this will help.please do rate the solution.keep updated for any further assistance if more help required.thanks.

This happened to me. I was looking at the unit and a pop up appeared to ask if it should continue searching for satellites. I clicked on 'No' and could not get a signal thereafter. After a lot of searching on how to turn the search back on, I eventually reset the unit by doing: Tools, Settings, System, Restore and this fixed the problem. Good luck (although the post is 11 years old, Lol!)

How do you download latest maps for free as i have been told it is possible ? Thanks...

It's only free to download the latest maps if a new map comes out within 60 days of your satnav first accessing satellites or if you have a satnav that comes with lifetime maps. However you can buy lifetime maps. The lifetime map of Europe costs €85 and you get updates every 4 months or so for the lifetime of the satnav.

HAVING PURCHASED A LIMITED LIFETIME UPDATE FOR MY GARMIN NUVI 250W, I FIND THAT I CANNOT INSTALL WESTERN EUROPE MAPS. THE INFORMATION GIVEN WHEN I SELECT WESTERN EUROPE, IS THAT THERE IS INSUFFICIENT SPACE...

firstly the reason it cant see corresponding countries is that the garmin units treat each map as seperate , the only way to rectify it is to copy the maps folder from your device to your pc then delete the maps from your device and then download the western europe whole map, doing it this way will give you the space you require plus it will allow you to choose any of the countries in the map

How do I get a free update of my Garmin Europe Sat Nav

The only time garmin give free updates is if a new map comes available within 30 days of you first connecting your satnav to satellites. To get details on how to see if you're entitled to a free map or for details on how to update your map go to http://www.fixya.com/support/r5628920-update_garmin_satnav_maps

Need latest maps for new zealand

Here is a link to the SD card version. It is also available on DVD. SD card is the easiest to install and use. The SD card version can also be transfered to other Garmin units like the Oregon 450 if you plan to go hiking, boating, or geocaching!

New Maps - Can't update unit

The new maps will be unlocked to your GPS using the code Garmin supplied you.

You will have to add these maps to a second SD card if your present card is full, or else purchase a larger card. Since all the Mapsource NT 2008 Europe maps are 1,395MB in size, you'll need to purchase at least a 2GB SD card.
