Try restarting the notebook and press F2 to get to the BIOS and look if the optical drive was detected, if not place the WIndows instalation disc into the drive then reboot the laptop and press F12 then chose to boot from CD, then press any key to start the instalation of Windows. Agree by pressing F8 then when you are asked what would you like to do press install Windows, on the next screen you will be asked again what action would you like to take, chose to repair the existing windows, and follow the onscreen instructions, this will not delete any files on your laptop but will infact repair windows. By chosing to install new windows, at the start the system will load the default drivers which infact will reisntall the CD /optical drives. Also before you try all this you could just go to Device Manger and check if any drivers are market with red "X" or the yellow exclamation mark under the DVD.CD drives. This should resolve the issue as it seems to be that windows is corrupted and cannot load the optical drives or detect them. Good luck

Insert your Windows XP CD into the optical bay of your computer.

  • Restart the system and wait for the "Press any key to boot from CD" notification. Press a random key and then press "Enter" to access the XP setup page.

  • Press "F8" to accept the Microsoft Windows XP license agreement once you have reviewed it.

  • Select your current edition of Windows XP from the hard drive using the keyboard's cursors and then press "R" to begin the repair process on the device's Windows installation.

When turning on my laptop (DELL Inspiron 1545) the set up starts until I get the message 'BOOMTRG is missing, Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart'. Along with this, there is a yellow flashing light

This is an error message your operating system boot manager file is corrupted or missing. A clean re-install may solve the issue. Sometimes you need to format the entire HDD to install the OS. Remove the HDD from the drive bay and connect it to another pc using an external 2.5" case via usb cable and select that HDD from computer and rightclick then format. Select ntfs if needed. Untick the quick format and click OK. it takes a while to finish. After format complete remove the HDD and refit it in your laptop and re-install OS as usual. Hope this helps.

    CD ROM DRIVER

Optical drives (cd/dvd) for the most part don't requires drivers in the sense other hardware does. That's why they work during boot.

Make sure it has power (ejects). Check Device Manager in Safe Mode by pressing F8 during boot. Right click My Computer > Manage. Select Device Manager > View > Show Hidden Devices. Now delete all DVD/CD-ROMs and reboot. Windows will say "New Hardware Found" and install. Check BIOS by pressing F key (correct F key is noted during boot) and make sure BIOS see's the Optical Drive.

On booting it shows mesage" boot manager

Hello prathames830, for the CPU to: Find the OS or Boot Manager !

    Follow these instructions
To get the Computer to "Boot into the 'OS,' and Loading Windows."

    • Restart the Computer
    • Next, just before the computer show the "Promt Window!"
    • Press the {F12} button.
    • This will open the "Boot Menu:" [Priority Boot Sequence] window.
    • There will be a "list" of (Devices), Optical Drive / CD, SATA / HardDisk Drive, or USB...
    • I do not know the "Configuration of your Operating System" or the Drive: that "holds the Boot [NTLDR] files.
    • It may also hold the "Master Boot Record" or Boot.ini file?
    • So, what you need to do is give the Drives a "Priority Boot Sequence.
    • Meaning: You will 'place' the Drives in the 'order' of Bootup [First] listings.
    • You will use the {Arrow buttons} to 'move the "Drives."
    • More than 'likely' it will be the (*Optical Drive / SATA or Hard Disk Drive}.
    • Try each, and hopefully the Computer will make it to "Windows," and you can "Login!"

That error shows up when Windows find an irreversible error on the Hard Disk Drive. I'm sorry to say that the only solution is to change the Hard Disk Drive.

I have recently replaced the hard disk in my evo n610c compaq laptop. I have a windows xp cd. But when I turn it on I just get the 'non system disk or disk error' message. I have changed bios...

When you first start the system ensure you have the windows XP CD in the optical drive before you try to boot. Once you see the Compaq screen press F12 (or if the system has a different prompt choose it) to get the one time boot menu, select the optical drive with the arrow keys, press enter, the system should give you a 5 second prompt to boot to the XP CD, press the spacebar to boot. This should bring up the windows XP setup, choose NTFS quick for the file system and then for any other prompt the default setting and windows should install

Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key

Hello cdcrowley2, it seems that the "problem is the [Operating System] is not loading correctly." The CPU is trying to find or fix the 'loading' of the OS!

    Follow these instructions
To get the Computer to "Boot into the OS and "Loading Windows."
    • Restart the Computer
    • Next, just before the [Page] that you mentioned, "Displays," {Press the F12} button.

    • More than 'likely' it will be the (*Optical Drive / SATA or Hard Disk Drive}.
Try each, and hopefully the Computer will make it to "Windows," and you can "Login!"

My dell inspiron 1525 has a black screen with a white cursor showing

First, I want to know if you sees the Dell logo after turning on the laptop? If yes then this is no boot issue.
    1. Immediately run the PSA. Make sure laptop is off. Press and hold down the Fn key, while holding down Fn key press the power button at the same time just once. Once the Dell screen loaded you can now let go of the Fn key. Check if the PSA will run short test for the LCD, RAM and HDD. When full color displays on the screen just press Y. PSA will continue. Just take note of any error code will appear on the screen such as 0141, 0142 and 0146 these are HDD failure errors which means HDD needs replacement. If the test says no errors found then proceed to step 2;
    2. Try restarting the laptop once you see dell logo then keep tapping F8. Select last known good configuration. Press enter key. Just wait and check if laptop will load Windows. If not then, restart laptop keep tapping F8 try to select safe mode check if it will load Windows. If not then prepare the Windows OS disc the one came with your laptop.
    3. While laptop is on insert the Windows OS disc. Restart the computer. On the Dell screen keep tapping on F12 to show boot menu. In the boot menu select CD/DVD ROM Drive. Press enter then keep tapping on space bar until it will say Windows loading files, please wait.
    4. In the User Interface it will show you some options to select. Once the Install screen comes up look on the lower part select Repair Your Computer. If will ask you to do Startup Repair, please do start up repair. If fails try the System Restore. If fails then step 5;
    5. If you have important files in your HDD then back up your files first. After backing up of files you can now install the Windows OS. Here is the process in installing the Windows OS. Insert the Windows OS disc, restart the laptop, keep tapping F12 on Dell screen, on boot menu select CD/DVD ROM Drive.Install the Windows OS. Just complete the installation. After the installation install the laptop drivers.

Dell Inspiron 1526 laptop won't boot up

The 2000-0147 error is normal as you had no disk in the optical drive to be read during the test. Boot to the Vista DVD and select the repair my computer option (you may have to run the repair process several times depending on the issues with the drive) See if that helps. If no go, then a reinstall of Vista is likely
