Question about Canon PowerShot S50 Digital Camera

1 Answer

When I open the lens door the lens doesn't come out. So the camera is not activated. The battery is fine and I can still connect the camera to my laptop. Somewhere I read that there is a little battery inside the camera that maybe needs to be replaced. Is that correct and how can I do this?

No there is no such little battery in the camera.there is one battery in the back of camera from which the battery gets power.if the charge in that battery is less or that battery is weak or faulty then this same problem of lens not coming will occur.but if you are confirmed that battery is properly charged and its not weak.then the problem may be either the lens assembly getting blocked or there is a motor inside the back of the lens assembly.the motor actually makes the lens assembly go back and forth.if that motor is got weak then this problem can occur.so the problem is either lens moving assembly got blocked or broken or the motor is weak/faulty. that has to be checked. before going for any internal repairing and checking .just be confirmed that camera battery is properly charged and working.in many cameras it has been noticed that due to weak or faulty battery this types of many problem occurs and replacing the battery solves the problem. this will help.please do rate the solution.keep updated for any further assistance if required. thanks.

When I open the lens door the lens doesn't come out. So the camera is not activated. The battery is fine Its new battery I reblaced the camera completly not working please what is the problem and what is...

From what I have seen the best two options for fixing this are to force it out... not to the point of breaking but try to guide it until it comes out the rest of the way. You can try using a plastic pry tool to try and force it out. I wouldn't recommend using metal screw drivers or anything like that. The other method I've seen is to disassemble the camera and reseat the lens properly. I think you'll get it with the first method but let me know how it works out either way.

The lens will not come out. The shutter will not open. Installed new batteries, Camera hardly ever used

If the camera is showing some electrical "life" or activity, see this:
Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ... Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to this can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some things that you can do that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.
But if the camera is completely dead with no activity (i.e. it won't power on): Things to check would be battery contact points, and micro switches that are located on the battery and memory card doors. Troubleshooting tips on other things that need to be checked may be seen here. These tips won't work for every case, but they're worth a try.

Battery died while lense extended and now will not power up.

Some of these cameras that have a lens that extends use gears to extend the lens. The gears can strip or get clogged with fine debris and jam the lens. Usung good quality rechargable batteries NOT ALKALINE will usualy have the power to drive the lens.

Ask yourself, how many cycles do you have on the pack? could the pack be weak and not power the camera fully?

Have you tried pushing firmly in on the battery while you power it up? If the camera will not power on with the door open, try and fold a small trip of paper and sit it between the battery and the door. This might push in on the battery enough to better the connection and solve the issue.

If the battery is fine then you may have a lens problem. The lenses can be jammed easy, dropped or an impact when extended is all it takes.

Sliding Lens Door Problem -- Canon S50

I had the same problem with a S50, where the lens door would not operate properly and would not open enough to cause the camera to activate. I took it apart and found that there are two small gears that keep the door on track, one had split in half and jammed the mechanism. They were white plastic, perhaps nylon? I found another S50 on ebay with broken electronics but a working lens door and took parts from it to fix my system. Getting the tiny gear in place was tricky as there are several springs used to activate the camera on switch.

Sony customer support is the place to go but I suspect a new camera is likely to be a more economic option
