Question about Black & Decker Garden

I have a B B& D Corded Grasshog that has quit doing an automatic feed

This is my response to the answer received by the first expert. It contains the problem I submitted.

I assume you are talking about the black spool that holds the line. As you will see below, that is not a solution to my problem. I use your spools of line and load each one in the case per directions in your manual. I then begin trimming or edging and when the line is too short to use( 4 or 5 minutes) and should extend automatically it does not. I feed out the line by hand so that I can continue work. When I've used all the line on the spool, I put in a new spool and continue hand feeding out the line. As you know, hand feeding requires that I open the spool holder, raise the spool enough to pull out some more line, properly replace it in the spool holder, snap the holder cap shut and continue my edging or trimming. Frustratingly time consuming. Obviously you have not addressed my question. The grass hog worked as advertised only for a few months. I have had it for three years and when I asked my local dealer why it was not feeding automatically they had no answer except to talk to B & D. I'd appreciate an answer to my problem."

Is the string spool seated on the rachet correctly? If so and all is well, it is worth noting that these trimmers auto feed fuunction is problematic at best, requiring manually unwinding some line every few minutes as the unit gets older.

that last comment was posted at another site for the same problem, this seems to be a design defect, suggest you contact Black and Decker for an answer, maybe there is a out of warranty courtesy repair?

Either your motor is burned out, your cord has separated, or the string that was coming out for the auto feed wrapped around the shaft and stalled it out.
If you have a multimeter you can check the resistance of the plugs on the unit itself. If you test and see that there is some resistance then the plugs on the unit are good. If it shows zero then there is a short somewhere. Check the extension cord you use and test the same plug on both ends. Again if you get a resistance then the cord is good, and zero would mean a short.
You can take the bottom of the unit off as you normally would to add string. Check and make sure that there is no string wound around the shaft.
If none of these steps resolve the issue then you'll have to take it in and have your local Black and Decker repair shop check out the motor.

When I had this problem I replaced that ratchet toggle part that the string drum sits over. Do you use replacement refills or do you refill them yourself. If you wind the string in the wrong direction it all affect the auto feed.

Line doesn,t feed automaticly

Hi there,

The line may be on backwards or has developed a knot. Debris may have worked its way inside the bump head preventing it from functioning.

Check out these items.

Best regards

I properly replaced the line spool but it won't feed automatically.

After you replaced your string in the trimmer and fed it through the hole in the plastic casing in which the spool fits into, did you pull the string until you hear a click? The click locks the string in, then you can bump and feed as usual. Otherwise it won't feed normally.

Battery to fit Black & Decker CST20000 Grasshog weed eater. Where can I buy just the battery or battery pack?

Unfortunately, the battery pack as a unit has been discontinued, but the battery itself (part #243213-00) can be purchased online. Amazon sells it for $35.99. You can find it here:

My Balck&Decker Grasshog won't automatically feed line.

Just replace the LEVER, Item #29, Part #598435-00, for about $3.00 (B&D, Dewalt). Just pull old level straight out (pliers) and push replacement in. Level end expands to hold it in place. No other parts. Forget cleaning and replacement the spool, graphite or oiling... just replace the lever.

Auto feed spool doesn't work

You may need to purchase a new spool housing, which may not be too hard to do, if you have one of the name brand trimmers. This replaces the whole mechanism that holds the line, the retaining ring, etc.
