Question about Whirlpool Duet GHW9150P Front Load Washer
Musty smell coming from wash tub
From another consumer with the same problem:
The mildew smell started about a month after we got it and got increasingly worse! Had a service tech out who replaced the gasket, but he left me a product called WHIRLOUT. It is made for hot tubs and spas and whirlpool tubs. You can get it at a pool supply or Home Depot or Lowe's. It is made to remove the soap scum buildup that provides a growing environment for the bacteria, which produces the smell. You add about a cup to the normal wash cycle. Do not put in the dispenser, add when the water is in the tub. I ran it through twice the first time. Then about once a month to keep it clean. Another thing he told me, don't use dryer sheets in the dryer because they will eventually cause a film to build up on the sensors that tell you when the clothes are dry. I've switched to Downey fabric softener in the washer. He also told me NOT to use a really thick fabric softener because it will not go easily through the dispenser. There is a drain hose by the filter on the washer - pull it out first and drain the left over water into a bowl or pitcher before you clean the filter. This will prevent the mess when cleaning the filter!!! LG never told me this, the same technician showed me this, too!

Powdered HE detergent fixed it for us.

Buy a new washer...It was the only way we could get rid of the musty smell. We tried EVERYTHING.

We tried bleach, special products, vinegar, ammonia to no avail on our Kenmore top-loader. Have now disassembled the washing machine and found that even after those additives, there is still a lot of mould in between the inner and out tub that caused the smell in the machine and in the towels. I plan to totally disassemble the machine and scrub all the mould away.

A plumber told me to leave door open when not in use. we have done this, it has reduced the smell but not eliminated it.

We had the same smell. It was so bad you could smell it when you came into the house. We switched to powdered detergent and the smell went away. If you put your nose down by the rubber seal you can smell it a little, but I consider the problem fixed!

Ours smell, too. We discovered that small items (e.g. socks) can fall into the space around the big rubber seal inside of the door. When we pulled the seal back for a look, we found several wet, smelly socks that had been in the washer for an unknown amount of time. Removing them DID NOT fix the problem. Every time the machine is run, it smells of mildew or sewer gas (yes, the floor drain under it has water in the trap). Our towels ALWAYS stink of mildew even when removed immediately and placed in the dryer. A higher water temperature is probably the only solution (we've tried the Sanitary Cycle too), but this puts our family members at risk for burns. A plumber suggested an in-line water heater to boost the temperature of the wash water only. I believe this is our only ($800) solution.
Anybody else have an idea?

We had this issue for about a year when someone else told us to use baking soda in the wash.
We took it a little different way and we no put a little bit of Arm & Hammer Powder Laundry Soap directly into the washer before each load. We still use the regular liquid HE soap and the softner as always. The smells have been gone for over a year.

Try running some ammonia through it and see if it clears up.
