Model 5812 has not been made since about 2008. You may have just bought it 'new' but it is not fresh. The battery is probably bad.

The chargeable batteries in my trusty philishave 5830 have been running down gradually. Lately, the shaver got quite hot when a plugged it in for a re-charge. Now, suddenly, it will not charge at all, so I...

It is impossible for me to say for sure without actually looking at it but the problem is, most likely, the battery. Changing it will probably fix the problem.
Take a look at the circuit boeard for corrosion or burnt spots. If you see neither of these, I would say that there is a 98% chance that only the battery needs changed

My philishave no longer seems to hold a charge. Is it possible to replace the battery?

Yes, there is a battery pack inside that can be changed. You will find replacement batteries for model HQ7740 at shaveroutlet.com. See link below

To replace them, you will need to first remove the flip up lotion cartridge cover on the back. Then remove the 5 screws there to take off the back of the case. You can then access the batteries. You will need to 'unsolder' the old ones from the circuit board and then solder in the new ones.
If you are not equipped to do this yourself, shaveroutlet.com can do it for you. See link below

I can't get my Philishave Coolskin to accept a charge. Pretty sure that the charger is working as I was getting the red charge light but didn't get the green bar indicators as it charged. Any ideas

Most likely, the battery needs to be replaced. The symptom you describe would suggest this.
You can purchase a replacement battery pack for model HQ6740 at shaveroutlet.com. See link below

To change batteries you will need to remove the lotion packet cover on the back and then remove all of the screws on the back to remove the back of the case.
For easier replacement, it is sometimes suggested that you use a modified installation technique. This is to break the tabs off of the old batteries rather than unsoldering them from the circuit board. This allows the old batteries to be removed but leaves the tabs attached to the circuit board. You can then solder the tabs from the new batteries to the old existing tabs

Electric Shaver will not charge

There are 4 small philips head screws deeply recessed on the rear of the razor. Unscrew these and the back half of the case just lifts off. Unsolder the battery leads and fit new battery pack.

Shaving head check indicator still flashing after installing new heads

Apparently you need to change the heads within two weeks after the red LED first starts to flash, otherwise the memory chip inside needs resetting. This also poses a further question. How does the unit know the heads have been changed or not ?
