If you have a Brother FAX-525DT, then place the document face down with the leading edge (top) down. The scan unit is on the bottom of the paper path for documents. The picture for how to position the document to be faxed is on page 55 (page 65 of the PDF).
If you are sending fax using the scanner bed, your original document should be placed face down. However, if you are sending faxes using the automatic document feeder, original document should face up.
Fax documents should be placed as you would any document to be copied or scanned. Face down for manually placed documents. If you have an Automatic Document Feeder, the pages go face up.
