It is possible that another device grabbed the drive letter that was assigned to your external drive. The links below will help you resign a drive letter if needed.

If the drive is not showing up in Disk Management then this is a sign that there is a problem with the drive. I would recommend connecting it to another computer to see if it will detect. If it does not then there is a problem with the drive and I would contact the manufacture of the drive do see if you are still in warranty.

Let me know if you have any more problems or quesitons

Not a good idea. With the correct screw drivers it can be done. WHY? there is nothing to fix, and most likely it will be useless when you finish.

I have a GDHDU and have lost the part that you actually plug into your usb bit of the computer and then back to the external hard drive. Is there anywhere that i can get this spare part?

If you are talking about the cord that goes from the external drive to the computer then yes. Go to your nearest computer store and ask them for a printer cable. Otherwise known as a USB A male to USB B male cable. I say printer cable because its the same as the standard printer cable. Most help their will understand right away what you mean when you ask for a printer cable.

Also get the silver not the gold tipped. Its cheaper and there really isn't any difference between the two.

We bought some time ago an WD External Harddisk and now the Adapter doesn`t work anymore! What can I do?

Try connecting it to a different computer.

Any external storage device has three major parts:
* USB cable
* disk-drive
* USB-to-disk-drive adapter

Try a different USB cable.

Disconnect the disk-drive from that adapter, and connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, and see if you can read the files, which implies that the adapter is the part that has failed.

If you cannot read from the disk-drive, check its WARRANTY status. W.D. will replace it, if the warranty is still valid.

Otherwise, W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program: find the serial-number of your unit, access their web-site, and purchase another W.D. external storage unit, at a significant discount, by citing the serial-number.

Or, if the adapter is OK, then replace the disk-drive by a new one, and close-up the casing, to create a "revived" external storage device for your use.

It whirs for a few seconds, stops, then whirs again for a few sec

The hard-drive is "dying".

Is it still under "warranty"?

When you have the serial-number of the hard-drive inside the external unit, access Western Digital's web-site, and check the Warranty Status.

Note that Western Digital (the maker of the external drive)
has a "Customer Loyalty" program. Enter the serial-number
of the hard-drive on their web-site, and you can purchase a new external hard-drive at a significant discount.

It seems you figure out the issue. If its under warranty then have it the "power" replaced.

Model HD160U2E5-72 s/n A0575461 is dead

Remove the actual hard drive from the case. Purchase a new external usb case for the drive. You can find them on the web from 7 to 29 dollars. Make sure you buy the right case for the drive 2.5 or 3.5 inch E-IDE or SATA ect. Install the hard drive from the old unit in the new case and you should be back on the road in no time.. Hope this was helpful....

If you really want those files, try DriveSavers.com. They do wonders with dead hard drives (known to have recovered files off a burned hard disk). But it comes with a hefty price. So check their website, http://www.drivesavers.com/.
