I am totally ignorant about these things but it is only used about 1 hour per spring for the past 3 springs.

When is the last time you replaced the belt?
if the belt is older than 2 years it may be glazed which when heated will cause it to slip and not turn the tines

if nothing else...take it to a lawn repair shop for maintenance before it is too late for things like your carb or the engine itself

just like a car you MUST follow regular maintenance
at this point, 3 years, you are looking at an oil change, air filter, spark plug and now the belt thing

If you cant move the tines by hand then I wouldn't think you sheared the pins, more like a gear box problem.

It appears that the gear case on your model is not capable of being serviced. The cost is over 300 dollars. There is a shear pin or similar connection in the case where the shaft connects to the pulleys. It has broken off and the shaft has no torque now.

Tines turning, mantis 2 cycle tiller

sounds like a piston seizure. are you using correct oil and ratio. carb could be going lean and causing the cylinder to over heat, adjust high speed mixing screw and hope no damage has resulted.

I have a craftsman 19 in dual rotating tines, rear tine tiller. # 917-293493. In mid till, the tines quit turning. Won't shift into any gear. Wheels are locked. Any ideas?????

It is going to be a transmission issue. You can try with the engine off, turning the trans pully by hand in the opposite direction that the motor was turning it.
Some gears in the trans got crossed up and locked.

If the tiller tines where jammed, the tranny and motor where still trying to turn and there could be a couple different parts broken. The tranny main shaft make have busted, the tranny gears could have jammed. If the motor does start, than that is a good sign. If not than the connecting rod or crank may have snapped.

I am guessing you will probably have to dismantle the transmission and see if there are any broken gears or shaft.

Best thought is readjust the gear control rod. That or the gears are allready stripped .

It sounds like the belt just stretched. Now you need to move the belt tensioner over to put more pressure on it.
