Printer printing very light copies

Problem Print is too light
Source of trouble Expired toner cartridge
Resolution How old is your cartridge? Did you know that exposure to UV lights can reduce the adhesion of toner dust? You may need a new cartridge. Begin by removing the toner cartridge and vigorously shaking it from side to side, then trying it again. If that doesn't work, check your high voltage setting ,If that fails, get a new cartridge.
Resolution Look for a darkness setting - it may be in the menu system, but there might also be a lever or knob inside of the printer (check your owner's manual). HP conveniently colors these knobs and levers green. This switch regulates the amount of high voltage power that is sent to the laser and influnces the amount of toner that is attracted to the paper. Crank it up. If neither this or a new toner cartridge works, you may be having fuser problems, or need to get a new high voltage unit.

Why are my copies coming out solid black, even though my exposure lamp is still working?

A couple of possibilities. Basically if your exposure lamp is coming on, the light is not getting all the way to the drum that is in the toner cartridge. It could be you have a mirror out of place. When the exposure lamp comes on, the light is reflected off the original and then off a series of mirrors until it gets to the drum. If one of the mirrirs has been knocked out of place, like due to a recent cleaning then that would cause black copies. The more common cause would be the drum protection "gate" that is on top of the toner cartridge is closed and thus blocking any light from getting to the drum. You can slide out the toner cartridge and look on top. There is a gate or panel that flips open to be able to see the drum. This gate must be opened when installing the toner. Also it is possible to have a bad cartridge but that rarely causes completely black copies.
Good Luck and Thank You for using Fixya.

How do i change the print cartridge?

Replacing the print cartridge
  1. Open the print cartridge door, and remove the old print cartridge. CAUTION: To prevent damage to the print cartridge, minimize its exposure to direct light by covering it with a sheet of paper. Figure 1: Removing the print cartridge c01174123.jpg
  2. Remove the new print cartridge from the packaging. CAUTION: To prevent damage to the print cartridge, hold the print cartridge at each end.
  3. Pull the tab until all the tape is removed from the cartridge. Put the tab in the print cartridge box to return for recycling. Figure 2: Removing the sealing tape c01211568.jpg
  4. Gently rock the toner cartridge from front to back to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge. Figure 3: Shaking the print cartridge c01211569.jpg
  5. Insert the print cartridge in the device and close the print cartridge door. Figure 4: Inserting the print cartridge c01174125.jpg CAUTION: If toner gets on your clothing, wipe it off with a dry cloth and wash the clothing in cold water. Hot water sets toner into the fabric.

NOTE: When toner is low, faded or light areas appear on the printed page. You might be able to temporarily improve print quality by redistributing the toner. To redistribute the toner, remove the cartridge from the device and gently rock it from front to back.
