The transaxle is making noise and bucking. It appears to need lubrication on my Craftsman 917.271532 lawn tractor. How do I fix this?

SOURCE: mounting snow blade to lawn tractor

It attaches the the front of the tractor. Similar to a plow to a truck. If you don't have the brackets, you will need those, or make your own. You can see a picture of the brackets if you go to sears.com. Click on the PartsDirect link at the top, and enter the blade model number.

SOURCE: Craftsman Transmission problem

Some of these tractors have a friction wheel that is driven off of a flat wheel on the bottom of the engine drive shaft. The rubber ring on this friction wheel could be worn out, or it could be out of adjustment.

SOURCE: How do I chamnge the oil in my Craftsman lawn

There should be a pipe OR quick release valve coming out the right side at the bottom of the engine where it bolts to the frame. Most of the Craftsman riders I have worked on, had a long pipe with an elbow at the end of it and a plug in the bottom of the elbow for draining. Turn the wheels all the way to the left to allow enough room for a collection pan. It holds less than 2 quarts so the pan doesn't need to be too large

SOURCE: Loss of drive in a Craftsman Lawn tractor

I also have a Craftsman tractor with the same problem. Sears repairman said it needed a new transmission and it would cost $1,400 to install. A new one is about $1,000. Anyway, if you remove the battery and the battery tray under the seat it will expose the transmission fill hole (hex). I opened the top and it looked empty. I had a bottle of 90 weight gear oil in my shop and filled the transmission to the top. I have not had any problems with it since. $4.00 bottle of oil verses a new tractor is worth a try.

Tractor moves but buck and learches

If it is a hydrostatic transaxle check to see if it is leaking,if it is then there really is no economical repair to transaxle. If it isn't leaking then It sounds like the oil in transaxle is degraded. The transaxle is supposed to be a sealed unit requiring no service but over time the oil will get dirty enough to cause problems like you are describing.Remove the back hitch plate and look at the transaxle it will have a rubber vent hose or a 1/4 Allen wrench fitting on top. You will need to purchase a battery suction bulb from sears automotive and use it to remove as much oil from transaxle as possible. Warm the transaxle up first by running it around, then suction the oil out.Refill with a good synthetic motor oil 15w-50 or 20w-50 like Amsoil or Mobil 1.Do not use transmission fluid or hydraulic fluid. When adding the new oil back fill it to within 1.5 in from the top,be sure to allow this amount of air space in top of transaxle for expansion.

Grinding loud noise in the transaxle

sounds like the bypass lever might not be re-engaging, push it in firmly. OR, the brake is sticking. this, of course, is if the noise is a growl or a groan. if it IS a grinding noise, look for something stuck in the trans cooling fan or between the axles and wheels, otherwise it's inside the trans and that's not good [re: replacement]

It sounds like the brake plate is sticking on the transaxle,if you look on the right side of the transaxle a rod and spring run back from the front to a plate, under this plate are two 1/4 pins that actuate the brake pads on the disc, lubricate these pins with wd-40 and move the plate back and forth to see i this frees the problem up.

Need to adjust brake/clutch 14hp craftsman lawn tractor

The brake is on the right side of the transaxle. There are two mounting bolts and one 1/2 nut in the middle that is your adjustment. Tighten it 1/2 turn at a time and hold the brake down and try to roll it until it holds.
