I bought my son a ps3 with 120mb memory for xmas after being told that it will also play ps2 games. Now we can't get the ps2 games to work. is a download needed ? or was I lied to by sales person ?

Well sorry to tell you this but the 120 gig ps3 does not have any backwards capabilities whatsoever. There is no downloads to make ps2 games work. Either the sales person bold faced lied to you, or they had no clue what they were selling. Sony only came out with 2 systems that have backwards capabilities, the 60 and 80 gig systems, although they are limited and the 80 requires a download. Sorry for the headache, if I were you I would give that sales person a good piece of my mind.

My ps3 wont play ps2 games. it is an 80 gig

well it needs to be backwards compatible mine is an 80gig and it has 4 portholes for usb if your only has 2 portholes (btw thats where u plug in wired controllers) then its a regular and not backwards compatible i no it sucks that happened to me and i just sold mine and bought a backwards compatible one. if u just got it in a matter of days you can go to wheere you bought it and ask them to exchange it for a backwards compatible one BUT THATS ONLY IN A MATTER OF A FEW DAYS

Can u play ps2 games on the 40gig ps3?

No, the 40 gig doesn't come with backwards compatibility like the 60 or 80 gig one does. Unfortunately the only way to play them is to get one of the other versions. Although, there are rumors circulating that Sony might release a patch that allows it.

PS3 wont play PS2 games!??

some 80 gb ps3's are backwards compatible, some are not.

unfortunately it looks like you have one that isn't.
my suggestion is to look on the back of the unit, underneath the barcode. the serial number will be there, followed by the model number. if you're model is not CECHE01 it is not backwards compatible.

sorry.

PS3 is not reading discs

There is a common problem with the Blue-Ray players in the PS3. There is not anything that i know of that you can do other than have your PS3 worked on

**Warning** If you have the old 80 or 60 gig ps3 that you are able to play PS2 games on and you are trying to go through sony for repair they may just give you a new 80 gig ps3 in which you will not be able to play PS2 games on any more that feature has been taken away

Disc read error

Hey, i bought a ps3 almost 2 years ago now, its been more reliable for me than my old ps2. i would try and phone them again if you aint recieved the case soon,
it does sometimes take a while for them to repair it and send it back ie if its the same console, they might just swap it for another ie once u get it sent away :-).
sounds like a problem with the laser, im sure you will see the case soon, and touch wood have no problems with the replacement ps3.
