Question about Canon Video Cameras

1 Answer

Canon XL1, firewire capture stopped working after a year. Running Sony Vegas Pro 8, WinXP Pro, HP workstation. Changed firewire card, re-installed Vegas to no avail. Also tested capture on a Mac and it didn't recognize camcorder either.

I have this EXACT problem with the Canon XH A1S on Vista 64-bit, using Vegas 7.0, and mine too worked fine for a year or so, then stopped cold. I changed card

Believe it or not, with the Canon XH A1S, the HDMI cable can EASILY fit into the camera whether placed in correctly with the straight edge at the top, or with the straight edge at the bottom. If you insert it the latter way, the camera's internal motherboard will blow when power is applied. DON'T GUESS! Always look carefully to make sure you are inserting it properly. BTW, Canon does NOT mention this anomaly either in their manual or at their website. Learn from my experience!

For Windows 7, Microsoft changed the game. They now require you to load new software to capture video from an older camcorder. Yes you do need to use the i.Link (Firewire) interface. I have had the best luck using the 4-pin to 4-pin firewire cable.
Video capture is in the LIVE Photo Gallery part of Microsoft's suite of software. LIVE essentials

You'll need a software able to capture and edit video. Your footage is on tape, right? First, you must have a firewire port on your pc, with the cam properly connected to. Then, all you have to do is make use of a program like Adobe Premiere Pro, Sony Vegas, or even the Windows Movie Makes, and find the capture window/mode/whatever, which will show you a console with play-pause-stop-rew-ff-rec buttons and a little monitor, to see where on the tape you are. Once on the capture console, you'll rewind the tape to the beginning of your footage and press rec ON THE CONSOLE, not on the camera. The software should ask you for a place to save the file and that's all.

The problem has now been solved by the software I have used, if you are using a programme with a capture and log mode this should automatically find the camcorder for you.

I had this problem once and it was after I tried to fix my registry with one fix all software utilities. In the end I actually had to re-install my operation system. There probably is a better solution, but that one was the one that worked for me.

Make sure in Ulead VideoStudio that your TV system is set to the one that corresponds to your country. If you only set that in the properties of the device itself, the program may still have set the TV system incorrectly. Ensure that it is correct. Also, you may have not installed the drivers correctly. If the video capture driver is not installed, you cannot capture with any program.

I had to get a Firewire cable to make this cam work with Vista. I was told Firewire is faster (?) and much better video quality because it is made for loads of data. I can't tell any much of difference from USB, but it does work with Firewire. So, basically try a Firewire cable.
