Adding more ram that you could find off craigslist or ebay may be an option but with sub 300 dollars computers at best buy that are much faster it doesnt make a whole lot of sense to do more than that. A new OS will be costly and slow the computer down.

Best buy has a windows XP cheapy that is a super small form factor with a small flat panel screen for 299 last time i checked. It is way more powerful than your unit and it will have a 1 year warranty.

Good morning, I have a windows 98 os, mouse (m-rn67) stopped working. no luck using newer mice, doesn't recognize. can i update computer using usb w/driver for newer mouse?

Hi janettgordon,
I am not exactly sure what you mean by "can i update computer using usb w/driver for newer mouse", but if you want to know if you can update the USB component of Windows 98 I regret to say to you that it's not possible.
USB support on Windows 98 always been tricky and Microsoft never officially supported it before Windows 98 SE. I don't know what version you have, but either way USB support under Windows 98 never been great. You also need to keep in mind that Windows 98 is quite an old system and no recent hardware like mouse, keyboard, printers is supported on it anymore.
My advise would be to upgrade your current Windows installation to Windows XP or Windows 2000. A friend can probably lend you a copy and I'm 100% positive that it will solve your problem with newer mices. You will need to make sure your computer can handle Windows XP or 2000, but they can run under pretty old hardware so it should not be a problem.
Cheers!

I have a compaq presario 7470 PC which currently has windows 98, Iwant to know how can i update it with windows 7 and how muche it'll cost?

Generally the specs for Windows XP machines are good enough for upgrading to Windows 7 without too much cost.

But, Windows 98 was a bit further back in the history of Windows.

You can go to Microsoft.com and use an upgrade advisor to see if Windows 7 will work on your machine.

And, they'll tell you the cost.

I had Windows 98 OS on my desktop and I wiped it out and installed Windows XP. My system performed better before I did this, how do I get rid of XP and reinstall Windows 98? I don't have the Windows 98 CD...

If you don't have the Windows 98 CDROM, or an image backup of your Windows 98 installation (if you don't know what an image is then you don't have one) then you're in a tough spot.

You can't just "go back" to your Windows98 machine, you will have to reinstall Windows 98 from a CDROM. So you will have to find a disc from someone/somewhere and hope it's the same version of 98 that your product key was for (if you have the product key). Or you can purchase a new copy of Windows 98SE. They cost around $55 from several websites (viosoftware.com for one).

On another note, if you computer is running slower with XP it's most likely due to the amount of RAM being low. Try to get at least 1GB of RAM in your current PC and you'll probably see XP run better. You could also try installing Ubuntu, it's a free operating system.

You may need to check to see which "service pack" you are currently on.

See below requirements:

System Software — Windows XP & Vista
  • Windows Vista Business or Ultimate Edition
    • 32-bit OS Installation Only
  • Windows XP Professional or Home Edition
    • With Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3

  • Not Supported:
    • Windows Vista 64-bit (any version)
    • Windows XP Professional x64 Edition
    • Windows XP Media Center Edition
    • Windows 98, Me, 2000, NT, 95, 3.1, DOS

  • Not Tested:
    • Windows Vista Home and Home Premium Edition
    • Although Windows Vista Home and Home Premium Edition have not been tested or qualified by Digidesign, there are currently no known issues with Vista Home and Home Premium 32-bit operating systems and Pro Tools M-Powered 7.4 compared to the supported Windows Vista Business or Ultimate Edition operating systems.

Windows Vista SP1
There are currently no known issues with Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista based on our initial limited testing and customer feedback. Although full qualification with all Digidesign products has not been completed, we do not recommend against updating to SP1, given the number of important overall system fixes in SP1. We do recommend that you backup your system and create a restore point before updating to SP1, should you encounter any problems after installing the update.

Running windows 98 on an inspiron 8200 notebook

When I've done this before, I had to goto the chipset drivers website in order to get the correct drivers for win-98.

This takes some time time, and a little hunting - you can goto driversguide.com to help get started.

My computer is not booting up.

Try this,Start in VGA mode.Once started, update your video drivers and do a virus scan

To use a Safe Boot option, follow these steps:
  1. Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press the F8 key when the Boot Menu appears.
  2. Select an option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.
  3. When the Boot menu appears again, and the words "Safe Mode" appear in blue at the bottom, select the installation that you want to start, and then press ENTER.
Safe Boot options loadTOCNode(2, 'moreinformation');
  • Safe Mode (SAFEBOOT_OPTION=Minimal): This option uses a minimal set of device drivers and services to start Windows.
  • Safe Mode with Networking (SAFEBOOT_OPTION=Network): This option uses a minimal set of device drivers and services to start Windows together with the drivers that you must have to load networking.
  • Safe Mode with Command Prompt (SAFEBOOT_OPTION=Minimal(AlternateShell)): This option is the same as Safe mode, except that Cmd.exe starts instead of Windows Explorer.
  • Enable VGA Mode: This option starts Windows in 640 x 480 mode by using the current video driver (not Vga.sys). This mode is useful if the display is configured for a setting that the monitor cannot display.

Cannot play games.

ok here come the questions lets look at the issue and see what we can figure out.

you have a intel 865g motherboard:
lets make sure you have the most current drivers for the board
for you onboard video
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=1044

ok next we wanna check the game compatability list suprisingly this board has one so here you go and click on this link to view it
http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-010472.htm?iid=graphics+865main&

Make sure you have the most current version of DirectX as well

Also make sure any game you play is updated to the most current available as well.

if you are still having trouble playing games once this is done I would look at the games specs to see what its minimal and max required to play it. and see how it matches up with your current configuration.

Flatbed scanner

i dont believe this is made by epson.
however, the drivers for an old unit is usually not transferred over. The cost to make drivers for an old machine is very expensive for a small group of people.
I recommend you get a new one, the costs are minimal and you will get much nicer features.
