Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have replaced my D slave drive, from a Maxtor 150gb to a Seagate ST3500630A 500gb. It shows up in device manager, but not in explorer. I have Windows XP pro.

Thanks very much. I didn't even know you could right-click "my computer". I guess I'll find another use for that! Thanks again

TRY THIS:

Right click on My Computer Icon on desktop.
Select Manage
Double-click on storage on right side window.
Double-click disk management.

Should see your hard drive listed. Right Click on it and select format. Make sure you select right drive to format as is erases all data.

After formatting close window and see if it is listed in explorer.

Hope this helps!

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).

You didn't mention a name so I will shoot in the dark to try to help...if your computer doesn't recognize the hard drive that is because it is not formatted yet.
If it is an IDE hard drive make sure the jumpers on the end of the drive are set the way you want. If it is a single drive set to MA or CS if it is the second hard drive select SL if it is a Serial drive it will detect the position by itself. Make sure you power supply plug is snug. More information can be gleaned easily from the manufacturer's site, Seagate, Maxtor (is seagate) Western Digital..and the like.
hope something here hit target, please leave rating. thank you kindly

Maxtor basics 500gb PN-9NZ2A4-500 will not power up. cannot access data on the drive

Have you tested to connect your HD with another cable (power cable)?

Is it an internal drive or external drive?

The following link is useful to do some tests with DiscWizard.

Check out this site that has a diagram. With Maxtor being acquired by Seagate, it could be found here:

Maxtor basics external drive

Hi Nuisance101, I recall your running vista. Vista is a nightmare. If you cound only see the troubles we see on a daily basis here at FixYa you'ed understand. It's a common problem with Vista not seeing USB devices, externial devices. It does & then the next second it doesn't. Same for all external devices. I'm am 100% sure the trouble is not your system or your devices. It's Vista. I have gone over dozens of post from vista users. One would think MS has been on vacation since the release of vista. You can look at vista's web site for help for a possible fix, at this link. (I have no faith). MS blames driver software. Your Maxtor drive is external. Henve no driver software.
So it falls into that vista area of one time vista see's the drive & the next it does not.
Either way I though Maxtor addressed vista issues. I prefer Seagate drives myself. Personally know lots of people who's Maxtor's drives have just gone down for no reason. Seagate bought Maxtor.

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/hardware.mspx

Most of the post from vista users, claim users should check vista's updates often. Since Max Blaster did its job, I'm inclined to blame vista.

I wish I could give you a better fix or suggestion but I'm up against vista. That's why I run WinXP Pro. I do not have these problems.

Best wishes Nuisance101!
Mike

Maxtor Can't Touch

I understand the problem you are going through and it is due to the fact that win xp sp2 install an NTFS filesytem on its hard drive and this file system was designed to be secure in a way that you don't remove disk drive or add disk drives just like that. Now the best solution would be to just reinstall you xp machine with sp2 with the hard drive already in the case.In this way xp will be able to recognize it as one of its own drives and now you will have access to it.
