The intake valve is the lower valve and its push rod is the aluminum one, the exhaust is the upper valve and it has the steel rod, there is no rocket science going on here, the aluminum push rod is used to cut costs.

The aluminum valve on the intake is to prevent valve lag not to cut cost.

They should be different sizes. I don't think it is aluminum, or steel, it is some kind of weird alloy that can't be burned. If you used a magnet to test the valves, the magnetic one would be the intake. But not always the case. The science behind it is mind boggling. Check out this website, hope this helps.

you referring to the valves not the pushrods. The pushrods are the same size but different materials.

The push rods are the same size. The exhaust spring is much stronger and therefore requires the steel push rod.

My question is, would it hurt anything to use a steel rod for each side.
the steel rod weighs .13 and the aluminum one .05, so roughly 2.5 times the weight, but that shouldn't matter should it. I just don't want to have to replace the aluminum one again if I can keep from it.

Exhaust valve push rods are aluminum.

From the Briggs repair manual
1 push rod is steel & 1 is alum, which one is - 8_11_2016_12_41_27_am.jpg

Bent push rods are a function of the valve guide coming loose in the head. The valve binds and you end up with a bent pushrod. Fix: Replace head. $94.00
