  1. Serial ATA:  If you have a 3.0 Gbit/sec SATA drive that is not being detected by your 1.5Gb/sec SATA controller, or it causes your system to lock up when connected to a 1.5 Gbit/sec SATA controller, you may need to jumper your 3.0 Gbit/sec SATA drive to the slower speed of 1.5 Gbit/sec for the system to recognize it properly. For further information on changing the jumper setting to slow down your SATA drive's transfer rate, please see Document ID: 193775
    -48-8s.jpg -- (Click to expand) Jumper settings for Seagate SATA drives
    -48-9s.jpg -- (Click to expand) Jumper settings for Maxtor-brand SATA drives

    ATA:  It is recommended that all Seagate ATA hard disks supporting the Cable Select jumper option be configured as Cable Select. If your computer system was built prior to October 1998 and does not support UDMA 66 or greater you will be required to use the Master/Slave jumper settings.

    -48-10s.jpg -- (Click to expand) Jumper settings for Seagate ATA drives
    -48-11s.jpg -- (Click to expand) Jumper settings for Maxtor-brand ATA drives

    When using Cable Select jumper settings on your ATA drive, all devices connected to the UDMA cable must also use the Cable Select setting. The cable decides master/slave device detection when the cable select jumper settings are used. Please consult Document ID: 196299 for further instructions.

  2. Faulty Hard Drive

    If you have completed the above checks and procedures and the drive is still not properly detected, please attempt to use Seatools for DOS (see the tutorial here) to test the drive.  If SeaTools does not detect the drive after the steps followed above, or an error code that signifies drive failure displays, please proceed to the our Warranty Services page to begin a warranty replacement order.

Trying to find the jumper settings for a Seagate 36G 80PINS SCSI 15K RPM HDD Hard Drive with an apparent part number 8E036JO (all my Google searches say it's a Maxtor), but the one I have is Seagate....

SCSI hard drives and devices have a jumper setting to configure the SCSI ID.
Each SCSI device must have a different ID.
The jumper/s are set for the following positions across 3 pairs of pins
: : : = SCSI ID = 0 no jumpers - usually for the boot hard drive
: : I = SCSI ID = 1
: I : = SCSI ID = 2
: I I = SCSI ID = 3
I : : = SCSI ID = 4
I : I = SCSI ID = 5
I I : = SCSI ID = 6
I I I = SCSI ID = 7
This gives a total of 8 possible SCSI devices on one SCSI controller.

I could not set the jumper ID as 3 in Seagate 73 GB model of Hard drive.It has 12 pins at the back of Hard drive.

You need a jumper on ID pin sets 1 and 2 (as if you were setting it for both ID 1 and ID 2)
These pin sets work like binary, so set 1 for ID1, set 2 for ID 2, and sets 1 & 2 for ID 3. In this mannar, with just the 4 sets of pins, you can have IDs from 0 to 15 (no jumpers to all 4 jumpered..1+2+4+8=15)

* * * *
* * * *
1234 set number
1248 binary ID (additive)

If you need further explanation, please post a reply here.

I have a Maxtor QMP20000AS-a drive What is the jumper settings

first of all SCSI drives are not configured as Master or Slave, they are assigned a SCSI ID. Your SCSI controller is usually SCSI ID 7 (not sure why) but you can usually remove all the jumpers and that would be SCSI ID 0. you can have as many hard drives attached to your SCSI controller so long as each one has a unique SCSI ID and is not assigned SCSI ID 7. I know this is not for your drive but look HERE to get a basic idea of how to assign SCSI ID's to hard drives.
