Question about Jenn-Air SVE47100 Slide-In Electric Kitchen Range

1 Answer

Heating element burned out (literally!)

The bottom heating element started glowing bright white (like arc welding) at one spot and was shooting sparks. The spot started moving along the element and made it about 5 inches before we shut off the breaker. I'm aware that the element is toast, but do I have a bigger problem?

I'm hoping the answer is that elements occasionally get oxidation spots that burn and you just need to replace it with a new one.

Dryer won't come on. Wire block burned. Wires test good. Heating coil lookes burned

A good heating element should have continuity. When the heating element breaks, there is no continuity between the heater terminals. But sometimes, the broken ends of the heating element can make contact with the metal heater housing (from vibration) and draw a large current, causing the symptoms you have described.

To confirm a "short" between the heating element and the heater housing, check for continuity between the housing and each heater terminal. (The shorted part of the heating element is usually welded to the housing.) Occasionally, the short will not be welded, but a visual inspection will verify (welding scars and black soot) that a short has occurred, intermittantly.

Replace the terminal block, heater, damaged internal wiring, and possibly the thermal fuse, thermostats, and power cord.

Good luck

Dryer was running and sparks flew out the back

probably the heating element had a hot spot in the coil of the element and it either sagged from heat and touched the case of the dryer and arced which threw sparks or it just separated with the same results

I have a GE Microwave Oven/Dual Element Browner Model # JES1288SHO3. The inside cabinet is arching through the wave guide panel. DAVE IN LA.

Hi Dave in LA,

The wave gude cover is replaceable, the part number is1085082. The reason for arcing through is typically a splatter of food stuck to the cover and then the heating waves overcooked or burned it. Carefully replace the cover (panel), look for any burned spots behind the cover, if the wave guide is burned through, the Microwave is unrepairable. If the waveguide has small arc spots you can carefully clean (sandpaper) and use touchup paint to recoat. I hope this helps and if it does, please let us know!

Heating elementglowing bright red funny smell

I
make sure the fan is working o/k, because if it is not, then the element will get bright red hot.
If the fan is working o/k, then the element will still get red hot, but not bright red.
If the fan is not working, then it needs replacing.

Bottom oven element sparked then quit working

The element sometimes will continue to arc inside after it burns out. It's 220 volts jumping across the break.
